It's a GTI - some yob has had it, driven the backside off it and ruined the gearbox, hence why at only 52.000 Miles, it's needed a replacement.

The rubbish job fitting it to sounds like the yob who ruined the original VW gearbox, and his mate did it in there garage!

Request a refund, engine has probs been revved off it's clock end!

    I'm sorry but....

Has the OP had a vehicle check carried out on the vehicle ( HPI or similar )?

It sounds like it may well have been stolen recovered.

I know some of the Seat gearboxes had a fault where some sub standard rivets could sheer off and damage the casing, leading to welded boxes. As they are part of the VAG and share engines with VW, it could simply be that rather than the thrashing that mystic meg seems sure it is.

I do that as a matter of course.

Faults should have been picked up on initial inspection of the car by the qualified person you took.

You can look up all the old MOTs on the DVLA site for free

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10020539

this will list recorded mileage (although any clocker would clock it before an MOT, not after) /fails/advisorys. You could also check to see if its been in an accident using one of the mobile text sites (but its a bit late for that)

That's a really useful link thanks.

    update:
this is the list given to us by by the VW garage doing the service and MOT.

Gearbox casing damage and welded.Leak from front of gearbox where gasket has been replaced with silicone. sounds like a bodge job tbh
Oil emulsified in the coolant -sounds like headgasket on its way out.. need a compression test to make sure
Coolant leak from engine (at gearbox) cracked/split pipe??
    Air filter box cracked
    Intake pipe broken
    Battery clamp missi g
    Brake pad warning loom broken
    N/S steering rack boot worn
    O/S/R tyre rotation wrong

Which of these things, if any, should be covered by the warranty?

tbh at 13k i would of had the rac/aa do a full car check ( circa 100 pound??) they would of probably picked up on all these faults

  • I wouldn't accept any repairs. I'd demand my money back, and if they refused, it'd be straight to court. No messing around.

    update:

I phoned this morning and they were not very helpful. The guy asked if the car was running, and because I said it was, he said 'so what's the problem, our warranty only covers mechanical failure'. He said he would get somone to call me back and now I need to know what else to say. The car was bought 'in excellent condition' can I pick up on that?

Surely the car will fail because of this problem, so it should be covered by the warranty, I'm just lucky that it was found the 'in time'.

phoned Trading standards today and explained everything. I am pleased to hear that I am covered under the sale of goods act ' not of satisfactory standard'.So now I'm following their advice.
