DSG box?..... Quite a few of them fail prematurely.... Its a nice box otherwise...
Is it in a Main dealer now?.....
What engine is it?... Not to up on the new VAG stuff but the earlier ones had Oil Coolers which when failed would put Oil in the coolant giving the head gasket panic.
I'd see if the Main dealer can read the ECU as that can say the mileage the cars covered... rather than going off the clocks if theres any doubt over mileage.0 -
The car is with our main VW garage at the moment who are doing the service. Sorry I don't know all the details and b/f is not around at the moment. I'll post more info this evening, as I will have to make a phone call to the seller (a garage in London) on Monday morning.Flying-High wrote: »DSG box?..... Quite a few of them fail prematurely.... 2005. 10 weeks. 13k
Ouch... altho you have to expect some wear and tear on a second-hand car, I wouldn't expect a bodged-up gearbox on a car I'd paid £13k for !!!
I think you do need to contact the dealer you bought from, and ask them what they intend to do to recompense you for this. They may well say 'tough', in which case I'd be in touch with trading standards .
They may offer to take the car back, and refund you (less an amount for 10 weeks use of the car)
OR they may offer to make repairs to the vehicle. If they make this offer you should accept it (I THINK that is their legal responsibility), but tell them that you want to have the car inspected again by your VW dealer after the repairs have been made, before you accept the car.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

It's a GTI - some yob has had it, driven the backside off it and ruined the gearbox, hence why at only 52.000 Miles, it's needed a replacement.
The rubbish job fitting it to sounds like the yob who ruined the original VW gearbox, and his mate did it in there garage!
Request a refund, engine has probs been revved off it's clock end!0 -
Will the warranty cover the problem? It depends what the warranty covers - you will have to read the small print.
I bought a 2nd hand car on the cheap. The dealership garage I took it to for a service said it needed £1500 worth of work doing. Interestingly, the warranty covered none of the work (the warranty covered only very major things).
I found out that the dealership garage were very picky with the faults they found and a local garage got the repair bill down a lot by missing out the things that still had 3 years+ wear left in them. That said, I paid 1.5k for my car, not 15k so my expectations were probably lower than yours. Please note: I am NOT Martin Lewis, just somebody else called Martyn that likes money saving!0 -
The bodged repair to me smacks of a cheap nasty fix to a car that's been abused by some 20-something yobbo who has since found he can't afford to run it. Fix it up sell the car on to poor unsuspecting sucker before it fails again, like all those Rovers for sale that have "just had the head gasket done".
I've pulled similar stunts, but with old bangers, including putting the wrong engine into a Volvo 940 because it was similar enough to work with the existing electronics. If I was dealing with a nearly new car I wouldn't be prepared to accept such things, however.0 -
update:
this is the list given to us by by the VW garage doing the service and MOT.
Gearbox casing damage and welded.Leak from front of gearbox where gasket has been replaced with silicone.
Oil emulsified in the coolant
Coolant leak from engine (at gearbox)
Air filter box cracked
Intake pipe broken
Battery clamp missing
Brake pad warning loom broken
N/S steering rack boot worn
O/S/R tyre rotation wrong
Which of these things, if any, should be covered by the warranty?0 -

A lot of faults OP, for a car that should have only covered 51.000 Miles.
I stand by my post though, I believe the car has been hammered by a yob thinking he will impress the local's on the estate!
I would go back and get your money, the amount of faults here I doubt the garage will want to pay out for.
Have you been given a price to put all this right?! I would guess a good bit, unless you go second hand on these parts which opens a whole new play area!
You need to not phone this dealer, go to there garage/yard whatever Monday and take the car and the list of defects that VW have given you, and request a refund on those grounds.
If you don't get anywhere, make it known you will involve Trading Standards and the local press.
I've heard of cars 20 years old + in better condition, that list only tells me the car has been hammed, and what condition the engine is in, I would hate to say or drive any long distance even with the work done in it!0 -
You paid 13k for it too?!
I'd want nothing but a refund of my money, it's a lemon!0
