  • We have had conflicting information with respect to converting from oil to LPG, do you know anybody who does this work?
    Kind regards

  • Anything is possible - however the guts of the machine would need to be changed virtually in entirety Burners, pipework, valves etc.......this could run into £1000's if you buy new parts and get someone to do it. Also you need to get it checked unless your qualified. Mind you thats only an issue if you have to make an insurance claim/rent out your house/sell it in future/care about your own safety though!

    Hi guys,

Resuscitating an old thread... I need an advice please!

Our Rayburn (gas) is not firing up the heating, we exchanged the control thinking it might be that, but no luck, so called out an engineer who said it is the pump.

Exchanging pump and servicing quote over £700!!! (inc the new pump).
    Is this normal price?
  • mmmm
Would need to know the make and model. The pumps are not Aga/Rayburn made - they are 'off the shelf'.

If its an older moder it could be that its difficult to obtain or obsolete.

The cost does look quite high to me.

Here is a supplier of Rayburn parts: http://www.heating-parts.co.uk/ProductByGroup.asp?PrGrp=2332

I have used them before (as does my heating engineer).

Also it may be worth trying to find the manual/fault guide. It could be the cut out switch or the photo electric sensor that is away and not the pump?

Pity you are not closer to Scotland. I could have recommended the only AGA guild certified engineer up here (all the others are tied to distributors/installers etc..)

No, he already assesed everything else and he says it is the pump. I doubt he would say it is the pump if it is not, as we will have to take the floor out for him to be able to access it etc.

He says the part is £150. It is the time that is expensive - he already been for an hour and half and he says he will need 4 more to replace the pump.
  • Ah - cost of the part looks Ok(ish) he is probably adding some margin.
The hourly rate (£100!) is Expensive!
I pay £35/ Hour and my engineer is a full Aga Guild member!

not sure if that helps or not?

There isn't many aga engineers here... It's not like we have that much choice!
Does it have to be done by aga engineer though?
  • No - it does not need to be - but many engineers are scared off as Aga/Raburns appear to be shrouded in some mystery!
In reality its not that difficult - its a dual burner setup. Access can be a bit of an issue as can getting the correct infor from Aga. Even they don't know all the different configurations!

Thing is, if you are paying that much money it might be worth paying someone travelling time.

Landy's man - 4 x £35 - £135 vs your man 4 x £100, that is £265 towards 'extra hours' to get to you. At least he comes with a recommendation.

There must be someone nearer that does not charge so much. Is this one yours? http://www.misterwhat.co.uk/company/1394276-paul-mcmahon-aga-services-manchester

Hodges Range Cookers, a well established UK based company in Herefordshire, specialise in reconditioned Aga and Rayburn cookers. We do not just supply the cookers, but also maintain, service and repair, in addition to offering customer advise. With over 15 years experience with reconditioned AGAs, you can rest assured that the highest quality service will be received, backed by a 12-month guarantee.

Thought I would also post this about the AGA care plan. Says they will fix it and charge you when they start the care plan and the inital check is free so it might be a way of getting a 2nd opinion!! http://www.agaliving.com/media/119001/aga%20care%20booklet_reprint170111%20out%20of%20warranty.pdf

And price list for the care plan: http://www.agaliving.com/media/119007/aga%20care%20prices_hr_vs2%20out%20of%20warranty.pdf

I looked at AGA's just last week but I just find it weird they have no windows so if cooking cakes or yorkshires, how would you know when they are done? If you opened the door too early they would just sink.

No BM, I haven't found this one at all!! And I spent an hour googling!!
Worth giving this one a call!!
Our is one of the main Aga shops and servicing places..

I do realise that about traveling - question is whether they will travel at all, and given that this guy has already been (and we will have to pay for that) etc I don't want to pay someone the same amount just to spite my face of having someone else. £265 to travel to and from Scotland will not stretch that far no matter how much you calculate, it takes me 4.5-5 hrs drive one way to visit my brother and you are paying time and fuel so as I say it does not go that far!! (obviously depends on place in Scotland).

I have found couple of names in 50 miles radius, OH will give them a ring to see what the score is.
