    Thanks Bunny and Claire,

I feel really sickly nervous. At least driving there will take my mind off the interview - it is a 2 hr interview and tour of the campus - like I care about the facilities! I care about the cost of the course and if they will accept me. Byeeeeee

Ooh! Just seen my name! :j Thanks Bunny that cheered me up, just come home from a very horrible day at work!

I work for a council department and we've just been told over 3 years there's going to be a 75% cut...don't know what that means, to be honest I'm not actually worried at the moment.

As to the horrible day, mainly had people coming into my office all depressed and am worn out trying to cheer people up! We don't know what's coming, the email's rather vague and it's just a wait and see thing.

I have interchangeable skills and a varied CV so I can work anywhere, I feel sorry for people I really do, just wish I wasn't everyone's agony aunt when things go wrong!

    Good luck Katsu!

I get excited over mad things too Elfen. Though last thing I got excited about is too geeky to mention!

I personally hate anything Cadbury's, but I am partial to a little Galaxy Counters if they're about - I remember them when I was 6, but they were Nestle and had a giraffe on the wrapper...(I think...it's 31 years ago) :)

Cheers Tenmah and Bunny. The purple in the curtains is exactly the same shade and material as the bedding. I think I'll measure up and go get them tomorrow, I've got a load of bagged 20ps that I was going to use for a rug, but I can get one of those any time.

    Hi Vampy

I also work for the local council and we have just gone through a review. We were told that there would be 25% job losses over three years, and I thought that was bad enough although as usual they were lying through their teeth and the 25% went straight away rather than over three years.

I was one of the lucky ones and was told from the beginning that my job was safe, except I was being transferred to another office, so I felt happy I had got my job but guilty as I had to sit and watch all the others going through the whole process and having to be interviewed against friends etc. and being told they hadn't got the job that they were effectively doing now. It was all anyone could talk about and there was constant groups of people whispering in corridors etc.

Hope yours is handled better than our was!

I worked for a council and read a report online in early October (written by my boss) saying that my post was going in March. He had been telling me for months that it was all up in the air (we were both on fixed term contracts) and he didn't know what was happening. At the same time there was a lot of whispering and moving of work in his direction. He then tried to avoid me for about a month while steam came out of my ears.

We had an scoring process in Nov/Dec based on the bosses boss and the one above that's knowledge of our work / jobs. They had fortnightly meetings with him throughout our contract and none with me so that was a really impartial exercise. I then got to challange their 'knowledge / assessment' of me.

End result - He scored higher than me, they really wanted him anyway. That's what they said in October.

Other End result - He is now being made redundant :)

Lesson - Start planning now for your various options.
Get information on the redundancy policy and the redeployment policy (and check out other council's if yours is crap) - Generally for council's it is 1 weeks pay untaxed per year worked for any council and 1.5 weeks for every year after age 41
Take advice from any independent HR person you know.
Work towards what you want to do, particularly if you aren't currently doing it.

    B
Doing a Masters in housing from September because she's always wanted to do housing.
Has been supported over the summer and into her course by a £20k final salary payment (ouch - they really didn't like that, it being a fixed term contract).
Ignored the advice from my HR that I could start a job with another council the day after I'd left there - I don't care if it is in the policy, it effectively means I wouldn't have been made redundant from local government.

    p.s. @ Tenmah
From yesterday. Ring / email your MP to tell them you are sending them a formal letter regarding your problem. Then you write a formal letter to 'Dear ....' and they can use it to pressurise others effectively. Remember they have a job to do as your MP.

It was just typical council - we only got the email today about it and it's very vague and out of the blue - though we all knew there were cuts. I've worked at so many councils over the years that I think I'm immune to it, the big bosses will have already decided what's staying or going and I'm sure I'll be transferred if need be, but hey, what will be will be!

Besides, used the bad day as an excuse to use my Tesco vouchers and treat myself to a Veggie Pasta meal and cream cake...:D
