lidls i think has been that price for a while. i buy it from there when i go there but i hardly ever visit the store.

morrisons this morning was 60p, and asda last weekend i saw was also 60p.

tesco has baking items on 3 for the price of 2. but their flour is now up to £1.29 i think.
  • Ah! - Now I know why my local Lidl has had no bread flour on the shelves for the past 3 weeks plus I see that the shelf ticked gives the price at 50p. I have been buying it from there for months and never had any problem but now every time I go the shelf is empty!!

Have you tried early in the morning or asking the staff? The branch might just be low on stock, the one near me always has shelves full of it, it's just not that popular with the people who shop there. Maybe try another branch if you get chance.

With the tesco 3 for 2 you can get 9kg of allinson strong white flour for £4.38.

we've got 4 Lidls & the biggest shops rarely have any bread flour, but the smallest & oldest store (my nearest :)) always has loads of it

so if you've more than one branch you can get to, it might be worth having a look in a different one

I second Lidl, it's by far the best over the counter white bread flour, even better than the expensive branded ones

even at its usual price, 64p iirc, it's a great bargain
  • Is everyone aware of the "nasty" things that go into wrapped bread. Why does it stay fresh for such a long time - additives. Below is an FAQfrom the Fabflour website - flour advisory bureau a government quango. Instructive reading would be Elizabeth Davids English Bread and yeast Cookery AND Andrew Whitleys Bread Matters (the latter will turn your head from the shop bought loaf. The dreaded Chorleywood process with masses of excess yeast and no time for a natural flavour development ends up as the sliced white or coloured caramel "brown" loaf. And is everyone aware of the differences in wholemeal/wheatmeal etc. Talking of the cost of different flours is only the tip of the iceberg. Yes you can get cheap white flour but how much chalk ("calcium" to make it sound scientific) goes in to it LEGALLY. They used to call that adulteration and I though that went out in the middle ages! Even Mr.T now puts amylase (an enzyme) into the quick yeast. Four years ago they didnt so what has changed. Buy 100% stone ground wholewheat and at least you know that it is 100% wheat and not the contents of some factory lab.
    Question:
What is added to flour by flour millers?
    Answer:
In the UK, the law requires addition of two B vitamins (thiamin and niacin) and the minerals, calcium and iron to white and brown flours. Because it is made from the whole wheat grain, wholemeal flour already contains these vitamins and minerals, although white and brown contains more calcium because of fortification.

Dont buy too much wholewheat flour at a time because it does go off due to oil in wheatgerm deteriorating. White flour has much of that removed and so maintains "freshness" longer. Enough of my rant
