I get through loads of flour too. I buy in bulk from the supermarket most weeks -4 or 5 1.5kg bags. You will use up flour from a big bag at exactly the same rate as flour from a small bag.

I couldn't find any supplier that was cheaper than a supermarket and many were much more expensive.

I think what the OP was saying was that she would like to buy bigger bags, and so use fewer of them. Seems sensible to me to try to buy in bulk; it;s just that for low value, high density items (such as flour) the delivery costs outweigh any savings on bulk purchase :(

Mumof2 - do you have a mill near you - they may sell large flour sacks that you can collect :j

I'll merge this into the existing thread later.

Hiya Mumof2, I don't know where you live but I discovered this mill in Wantage, Oxfordshire and when I've used up all my bread flour I'm going to buy in bulk from them in future.

I just have to jump in and say that we buy from this mill all the time, and you can order up to30kg of different flours for £3 delivery charge. The flour is superb and makes delicious bread/dough. The bags have the farms names on the back that the wheat has come from, and you can feel good about helping keep a small mill going!!!
Not the cheapest, but a 16kg bag of white flour lasts me a month and definitely the best imo.

I realise you may be after less packaging and perhaps less shopping trips but I can't help pointing out that a 16kg bag of strong white bread flour from the mill in the link works out at 97p a kg, whereas white bread flour from Tesco is 41p a kg.

I would find it easier to store 10-11 1.5kg bags in my cupboard than a 16kg sack which I would probably end up having to put in a mouse-proof bin in the garage.

I take the previous poster's points about supporting a small mill and the quality of the flour but if price is a priority then i think supermarkets are the best option.
  • Hello, I've found that it possible to get a wide selection of flours from the Doves Farm website. wwwdovesfarm.co.uk

There are also some unusual bread recipes to try out which is great as I love bread.

Freezeswont Kill most nasty germs, or fungi as they just go dormant. You need to either freeze dry or cook thing to kill them.

Well that's Ok then, I think most people will be cooking their flour;)

In any case I wasn't talking about germs or fungi IIRC I was talking about bugs -with legs, flour weevils. I'm pretty sure a spell in the freezer would finish them off.
