I've thought about buying flour in bulk, but it works out at about £1.00 a kg, and you get 1.5kg of Asda's wholemeal bread flour for less than that.

Our family has a tradition of making our own breads, best of all I get the children to do it and it's easier for them if they just empty out a pre-weighed bag of flour in a large bowl, add the yeast and fluid and away they go :A....I imagine that even if I managed to keep bulk flour safe from the mice, I would have clouds of flour in the kitchen after the children have fun weighing it by hand.

As it is, they mix up a quick dough before they go to school so they can have fresh brown bread for tea.:T

They also like a sweet yeast dough made up at night and filled with butter, sugar, spices and raisins, made into rolled buns and left to rise, frozen risen overnight, then whipped out of the freezer as soon as I get up, thawed in 15 ins by the Aga and cooked in another 15 mins straight out of the oven and into the tummies with no additives or preservatives, oh and dirt cheap! :beer:

Lidl and ASDA are cheapest for white bread flour now at 49p/bag. I prefer Lidls as their price seems more stable and ASDA can run out. Also they come ready packed in boxes of 12 that you can grab if needed.

Lidl mentions: "For bulk purchases, please see the store manager". I asked how much a bulk purchase was and the lady fobbed me off with "well they come on pallets of 250"
(ie. £122 worth of flour, 375kg!!!!).

I'm looking for some large sacks (ie. 16-25kg, not 375kg!) and find it's about £1.40/kg (inc. postage) on all the above retailers (Lidls is 33p/kg by comparison!). Anyone know anywhere where the flour is cheaper than this?

Cheapest yeast is in ASDA - the Alinsons easybake yeast that comes in a little pot (don't use it for handbaking, but fine for breadmakers). Its about 80p for 75g.
Cheaper still is Sainsburys fresh yeast if you can be bothered going to the supermarket every couple of days at 32p for 250g.

My large bags of delicious Bradmalt flour come from the garden centre in Driffield, East Yorks next to the mill. I think it's call Bells Mill or something

if you have one nearby you could try your local health food store, mine will order in a sack of flour if asked

I'm not sure if it'd be any cheaper than the big retailers though, but it wouldn't hurt to ask so you could make a comparison

I get my yeast free from Tesco's...just ask at the bakery...the baker asked me last week if his bread was not good enough :rotfl:

We've been wondering about this for a while too. We probably make 3 - 4 loaves a week and wondered if we could buy flour cheaper anywhere. If I bought huge bags though, I'm not sure where I'd have room to store it.

I've just been finding that I've been getting through the flour extremely quickly these days and almost resorted to buying bread the other day!

I don't know whether its me but it has seemed that buying flour has been getting ever more expensive, hence looking at bulk.
