  • The Reform group was forced into an embarrassing climbdown, after it had dubbed Stockport a 'crime hotspot':

  • I live in Hazel Grove, nice place next to Bramhall but slightly cheaper.
Has some of the best schools, Sainsburys, M+ S simply food store as well as local shops.
Also some good upmarket winebars and restaurants. There are also loads of pubs.
Transport links are excellent as Hazel Grove has the main A6 road running through it with the main bus route from Hazel Grove direct to Manchester and a Train station with loads of parking that is on the main Buxton to Manchester line.
Hazel Grove is also on the door step of the Peak District.
There is a mixture of housing stock, mainly privately owned from traditional terraces ( 130-150K), Semis modern to old style ( 160 - 250 K) and Detached From ( 210 K to megabucks! ).
I live on the outskirts on a small 70's housing estate that borders a large park ( Torkington).
As well as Stockport town we are near to Macclesfield and Buxton. Manchester is about 8 miles a way.
Airport is about 7 miles away.
If having to relocate Hazel Grove is worth a look.

Sorry just got home after believe it or not some viewings in hazel grove. 1 on forbes road but basically it needs rebuilding it is a repossession property next door to some good friends of ours. second behind the ford garage close to centre of hazel grove. Cant decide on the estate but quite large properties, Id prob go to have a second viewing on this until the vendor says ' house has been on since may and if you dont have a second viewing by the 25th Im taking it off the market!'. 3rd was the Torkington road area - clarendon road. Far too small as space is important.

Im moving from outskirts of warrington a village called newton-le-willows so Im used to a nice quiet high street and lots of fields. We have up to 135k so been viewing up to 140k.

Will show my OH all these idea's. I loved Disley but traffic on A6 at rush hour all the way back into Stockport was ridiculous!

  • Your budget will tend to restrict your choice I'm afraid. I've had a look on Rightmove and wondered about something like this http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-12104948.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy
(though preferably without the camouflaged chair on picture 2). I don't know what the schools are like in the Bean Leach estate area though, perhaps someone else will give some guidance.
You won't get much in Disley for £140k.

  • Hi

I live in Chapel-en-le-Frith and you can get a 3 bed house for <£140K
    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-9899627.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy

You can get back to Stockport via Whalley Bridge/Kettleshulme/Pott Shrigley/Poynton route rather than A6.

Lots of lovely countryside, Buxton and Castleton not too far away, fantastic bustling town with more-or-less everything you need here, there is Buxton for the bigger shops.

Bob, this is on the Bosden Farm Estate (AKA Bean Leach Estate/"Offey" Wimpey Estate) I mentioned, that I lived on for years. I think the school(s) are quite well respected - at least for the younger end of the market, IIRC.

PS Anyone else giggling at how many Stockfordians are there on this Forum !??
  • I think one big decision will be the choice between living in the town or living out in the more rural surroundings like Chapel or Disley and putting up with the commuting. I'll see what other people say, but I think Chapel to the centre of Stockport will take about 25 mins normally and twice that at commuting times, for example.
Also, long term, I don't know about the quality or location of secondary schools in places like Chapel, Disley etc. and suspect that children living in some of these locations will have a long travel to school.

  • Forbes Road is in Offerton, not a bad area, close to the town centre and mainly residential. Probably slightly cheaper than Hazel Grove. Not really many places to go if you fancy drink/meal out unless you want to drive.

The houses behind the Ford garage in Hazel Grove I think are mainly ex local authority and probably now mainly privately owned, they are quite a good size and relatively cheap compared to other properties.

The houses around Clarendon Road are also well priced and were once mainly rental properties although again now mostly privately owned. Clarendon Road is quite busy so some of the properties of there are a bit more attractive.
This area is probably about as rough as it gets in Hazel Grove as well.

Some of the properties around Talbot Street ( again ex LA) always look like good value for money.

You may also find that you could afford one of the bigger terraces, these are all located in the centre.

Happy house hunting.Let me know if you want any local advice.
