Gatley, Cheadle, Heald green are all nice, cheadle hulme, wilmslow. handforth all quite nice as well. Bramhall if you can afford it.
Stockport stated to be the most "average place" in the UK, altohugh I cant find the report online now, but basically schools are broadly good, hospitals broadly good, id say very low crime. My parents are still going on about a car on thier estate ( commuter style estate) got broken into 2 years ago, and they think thats bad.
For raising a family,. you can do a hell of a lot worse than stockers. And also to say that you probably missed "to buy or not to buy" this AM, which was in Stockport.
Me too!
All the places you list are nice. My parents live in Bramhall still, and some footballers did used to live there. Not sure if they do now (the actual ones that did then are retired or in the lower leagues by now).
Town centre can be a nightmare (i have scars to prove it - true)Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery0 -
There is nothing wrong with Stockport, it is one of the wealthier parts of Manchester. Has good schools, shops & transport links. It is a big area & yes certain parts aren't as good as others & I wouldn't live there but that applies right across the UK. Town centre is absolutely fine but like anywhere else you will get dodgy people who go there.
I would suggest using rightmove as a benchmark for finding a location as it is expensive in most of Stockport Area now.0 -
IMO Stockport's a nice enough place - some family lived in Cheadle Hulme - pretty normal suburbia, and some lived in Heald Green - same really, Cheadle, Gatley both nice, Gatley does border onto Northenden, but only the best bits.
Heatons - border onto some of Manchester but perhaps in the same way that Didsbury does.
Give Reddish a miss (it's ok, but not as good as the others) and avoid adswood and bridgehall, wouldn't bother with edgely and shaw heath either.
Offerton's not bad, but has got a big council estate in the middle
Pretty much anywhere further afield is really nice - disley, bramhall, marple etc although they all have council estates within them that are a little rougher than most of the area.
No offence to anyone from a council estate (I was brought up on some of the roughest one's in Oldham) but I'm just trying to give a frank, useful opinion.0 -
If you're looking for somewhere that is still relitively affordable then I'd go with somewhere like Cheadle Heath or Edgely. You're not too far from the centre, you've got Cheadle village on your doorstep which is pretty and the motorway junction is right there should you need to escape!!
We lived there for 12 months back in 2002 just as our little one was born but not from there originally.0 -
I lived in Heaton Chapel for 16 years but sadly couldn't afford to live there now. Example - in 1983 folks bought 4 bed semi for £36k. Sold in 2004 for £240k!
The Heatons are a nice place to live, although Heaton Moor is rapidly becoming the 'new Didsbury'.
Reddish has good bits and bad bits like anywhere else, Reddish Vale is ok, right next to the country park.
Good luck if you end up on the 192 bus route...lol (Stopfordians...to give them their proper title will know what I'm on about)...A6 is horrific these days!
Good regular train service to Manchester/Stockport from Heaton Chapel though, a few mins each way.
And did you know 'Early Doors' (the telly show) is based around the ex-landlord of the Elizabethan (The Lizzie) on Heaton Moor Rd!(Good old Ken!).

If I dared repeat what thr police officer told my friend regarding the increase in crime and the severity of it in Stockport you could understand where I was coming from. I didnt intend to insult anyone but given the size of the town and the information I have been given feel i need all the advice I can get for the sake of my children. I have given up alot just so my chidren can have an upbringing I wish I could of had and I will do anything to ensure they get it.
Im sorry if people took it as me having a go at all people living in and coming from Stockport.
Apart from that thanks for everyone's advice. Hopefully looking round a few tomoz so will let you know!Saving needed to emigrate to Oz*September 2015*

As I said town centre, it aint pretty on a friday night, hotspots always have been the big 192 bus stop by debenhams (Stockfordians you get me!) bus station in general and that hideous taxi rank by Grand central in fact, any of grand central im surprised that wasnt bulldozed years ago.
Personally speaking Id stay in the outlying areas, shop when I had to in stockport itself, socialise in the outlying areas or Manchester City Centre.
INcidentally, I came back to this to suggest Disley, and also High Peak. Absolutely stunning out there, really really lovely IMHO, and not far from Hazel grove for supermarket etc. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

This Ive come to know...

icklejulez wrote:Does anyone know of any nice area's around Stockport...Would like somewhere nice near by to walk to in summer ie park or local shops.
Icklejulez, the best thing you could do at this point is to give us a ball park figure for the property you're looking for. This will then allow us locals to be able to give you a far more accurate idea as to where you should/could look.
I have to say I agree with most of the above comments, with a possible exception for the comments made about Offerton. Yes, it does have a HUGE council estate, but, if you look around the area known as the Bosden Farm estate, it is still quite a nice place to be (I was there as a child, and grew up riding round the estate on my push-bike, playing football on the many expanses of grass, and enjoying the fields that surround a large part of it - yes, I was that Tomboy) The local schools are quite good too, as I understand it (though this is hearsay, as I personally have no children) and they have at least one one primary school on the estate itself (maybe two!?).
And real1314 - I lived adjacent to the Bridgehall estate for five very happy years. The estate was lovely, and the neighbours, well, I just wish I could have taken them with me when I movedEven in the worst areas, Stockport has little pockets of nice places to live.

As one regular poster who hasn't commented and is a Stopfordian (Lynz you've been away too long - it's Stopfordian not Stockfordian), then I'd just say that I generally agree with what has been said already. Heaton Moor is the top area north of the centre, Bramhall the top area in the south. Crime is IMHO as prevalent as you'd expect in a large urban area. Where is the OP moving from, so we can give some comparisons? The only comment I might disagree with would be Lucy's comment about Edgeley and Cheadle Heath. I would be careful about exactly where in those areas you are considering. Also, although it isn't a big venue, Stockport County/Sale Sharks ground is in Edgeley and will suffer from car parking on the surrounding streets in the vicinity.
If the OP give some more indication of where they are considering, then I'm sure we will be able to give more specific information.A house isn't a home without a cat.
Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others.
I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.
