Barclays have left me cashless

Update:
I kept phoning them up again and again calling different departments. Eventually I got in contact with an Indian guy pretending to have an English accent. I normally hate getting in contact with Indian call workers who pretend to be British but this guy transferred me straight to the people I needed (didn't tell me who they were though). I spoke to a supervisor.

Apparently Barclays don't feel I meet their criteria so my bank account will be closed. I need to go to the branch with my I.D. and remove my balance.

I'm ecstatic about this news. I personally feel that Barclays don't meet my criteria for banking with them. Any bank that accuses me or my family member of being involved is not a bank I want to get involved with.

I'm kind of worried at this moment. I'm in a lucky position in that I have relatives who will splash money on me for doing something that I am supposed to be doing (going to university). I'm worried that my next bank will do the same as Barclays. I hate the idea of phoning a bank up every time I get money just to make sure they won't consider money from retired people money laundering.

I think you need to calm done a bit. 'shaking with anger and worry' worry about what? You have said that the money is there and they have temp suspended the account. Did you lose teh card due to tapping the pin in incorrectly etc? They need to investigate to be sure that someone hasnt tried to steal your account. You would be much more annoyed if someone had stolen your card, it got swallowed, the bank gave it back then they emptied your account.

Be thankful that you need the money for a couple of toys and not to pay the rent/eat.

I am sure it will be sorted out soon for you, good luck and let us know what the bak does etc.

ARRRGH. I finally understand why my mum prefers cash over cards.

I was sent money (£700) to buy a laptop and get a blackberry. I've got a student account with them because I'm going to Uni in sept.

When I went into the branch yesterday to take money out. The machine swallowed it. After 3 hours of chasing around phoning barclays and speaking to the people in the branch. Each time being given a different reason why I can't get my card back or let alone access my account. It turns out that my account is suspended.

They told me to wait tills today. I did and when I phoned them up they said that the account is still suspended. The only thing I can do is wait for them to clear it up. The only problem is that I haven't lost any money. My balance is exactly what it should be.

I am angry. They are the only bank I use. The worst thing is that I've had more money transferred into my account before. Nothing happened then. Why all of a sudden do they treat ne

Is there someone I can complain to? I'm currently at the mercy and I hate being screwed over like this. I am literally shaking with anger and worry. I've never felt so powerless in my life before.

I suggest you calm down first of all. Once you have continue reading the rest of my post.

What have Barclays exactly said to you, because that is going to make a difference about the advice we give you. Your card may have been stopped for many reasons, including fraud prevention, your card expiring, or because they have withdrawn your card etc etc.

Once we have ascertained this we can see where to go from there.

  • If I was you and really needed the money then Take some I.D. and go in to your nearest Branch and ask them why it has been suspended?

If they try to fob you off ask to speak to a manager but don't allow them to hide you away in some room. Speak a bit loudly and clearly that your account has been frozen and you want an immediate answer why. If they still ask you to call someone, tell them you want them to and that your gonna stay their all day telling customers about whats happened to you.

PS- I wouldn't care if the money was for a gameboy or rent. Its your money at the end of the day and they can't hold it without a valid reason. Good Luck

Your post does not help at all. We are trying to get to the bottom of this, and there may be a very good reason for the card being stopped. You are presuming Barlays are witholding the money which is unlikely. So let's wait and see what the OP has been told shall we?

My card wasn't stolen. I am very careful with it. I HAD the card and I typed in the right pin code.

Either way. The BB and the laptop aren't just toys for me. I need a new phone and a laptop. I've been waiting for months to get them and I found a great deal on them.

The first thing they told me was that my card was expired. I called !!!!!!!! on that. My card expires in 2012. Then they told me that Barclays are issuing new cards and that I unfortunately didn't sign for the new one when it was delivered. I told them that sounds like !!!!!!!!. All of my cards have always been delivered unsigned. Then the guy told me that he's going to make sure I get a new card.

Later on I found out it had nothing to do with the card. They suspect my account of fraudulent activity. Only problem is that I haven't lost any money. Which means they suspect me of something.

I did this yesterday. At first when ever I asked to speak to a manager. They would try and get a personal adviser to talk to me. They all tried to calm me down by coming up with some !!!!!!!! excuse and telling me that it can be fixed easily. I spoke to barclays on the phone. Apparently I have to wait until the fraud department have dealt with my account. No one else can do anything about it. I'm simply not allowed to take any money out. Even if I have a Passport and a provisional with me.

Right, let's get the facts straight.

    • You go to use your card, and it doesn't work, you are told it has expired.
    • You call them or go into the branch, and they say that they are issuing new debit cards which is the reason for the expiry, which is entirely plausible.
    • They sent you a card which you have not recieved. This sounds like someone may have attempted to intercept your card and attempt putting a PIN in to access your account.
    • This has been flagged up to the fraud team, and hence why it is probably with them at the moment,
I suggest you go into your branch with ID such as a passport or driving licence and ask to withdraw funds to cover your purchases, while the fraud team investigate what has happened. Just because it has been passed to fraud, doesn't mean they are saying you have acted fraudulently, someone may have tried to access your account - they have a duty to protect your account.

Who sent you this money if you don't mind us asking?

It could be that if its come from an account oversees for example that they may consider money laundering?

It does sound like the branch staff didn't want to give you an honest answer, they were probably checking the crimewatch website behind the screen :rotfl:

Call Barclays HO Customer Relations on 0800282390 and select option 2 (#2 'you do have an existing complaint reference number'). You may not be aware of a reference number, but clearly you have already complained so there should already be a computerised record and a reference number, so that will not be a bar to you selecting option 2 and talking to them.

Let us know how you get on.

1: No card was ever sent to my house. I know this because my house is never empty. There is always someone here.
2: I am not allowed to access my account. I went there yesterday with my passport and my provisional and they still refused to give me any money.
