Co-operative bank student account 2010/2011: We want your feedback

  • I suggested my two students apply for this account rather than upgrade the halifax ones they already have.

We decided to go into the branch 6 miles away so that all the evidence could be taken in at the same time.

The first time they said they had no one in who could verify the documents. The second time (next day) they took the application forms and photocopied the passports. I asked if they needed the student finance and university acceptance letters. They said no, but I was sure they would need this to qualify for the student account.

Told it would take about a week for everything to be sorted. Not heard anything in the 9 days since.

DS goes away on Sunday, so will definitely be too late if they do want to see the letters.
  • I first applied for a Co-op account about a month ago for my daughter, who was due to start uni this month, applied online as previous thread said it was straightforward.
It has been a nightmare from start to finish, daughter now gone to uni, no co-op account, still waiting for MORE paperwork.
They wanted proof of where she would be staying, only originals, no copies, so I sent off her Tenancy Agreement, all signed etc, asking them to return it ASAP as she needed it to check into her accommmodation. Needless to say, we are still waiting for it, despite frantic calls a week ago for them to send it back. Accommodation people very obliging, took other ID.
Today daughter got a text saying they had insufficient info, no further explanation.
Am seriously unimpressed and they can stick their b**** account. Not good for business, Co-op, COULD DO BETTER!!!!! Has put me off any dealings with any Co-op business ever again.
  • Update to above. Went into branch on Saturday to see if anything was happening. Sorry, they can't help, but it takes 14 working days, (not the week to 10 days when we applied). Was told nothing is done in the branch anyway, but when I asked if there was any way we could find out I was given a number I could ring to ask, but they are very busy.

Another two losses to Co op banking.

Went across to Halifax and all done in 10 minutes, apart from the need to provide the UCAS letter. Letter from uni not good enough, nor letter from student finance. Oh well, at least that one was easily sorted.

And still no contact from Co op, now two weeks. Very disappointing.
  • Hi all,

I applied for this account online about 2 weeks ago. I was sent an e-mail within a short time informing me that i had been accepted and that they would write to me. A few days later i received a letter requesting that i send evidence in the form of a UCAS letter of acceptance and evidence of my student loan. These had to be originals and they did state that they would not return these to you so recommended that you kept a photocopy. I posted these off last Friday, first post, and received a cheque book on the Saturday, which also includes paying in slips, and a welcome pack. All i need to do now is register with telephone banking and deposit £300 into the account to receive my £1400 overdraft and debit card.

All in all so far it has been a very smooth operation and i am very impressed. :j
  • I've received my chequebook and all, but am yet to deposit the £300. How long does it take to receive the debit card once the £300 has been deposited?
  • At last I think my son has an account, a cheque book has arrived to our home address as listed on all the paperwork, he left for uni 2 weeks ago, he didn't want to change addesses until he was sure his account was opened, it doesn't take alot to confuse the co op. But thats all that has arrived, no welcome pack or any way to log onto account. We have used the sort code and account number to do an online transfer of £300 but still waiting for a debit card.
Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get debit card and password after transfer has been made? Helpline just tell my son that all paperwork is 2 weeks behind.

When I called them up they said that the debit card is manufactured overnight after the £300 has been deposited, so presumably they send it off the next day (providing it's not a weekend or bank holiday), although mine still hasn't arrived yet, and the overdraft is activated a couple of days later. You need to register for internet banking separately by calling 0800 590 483 , see http://www.co-operativebank.co.uk/servlet/Satellite/1199779298852,CFSweb/Page/Bank-InternetBanking. But I don't know if they'll let you sign up on behalf of your son or not. Once you've done that you'll be able to access your account online straight away using the details you gave them when setting up online banking.

Cleared £15,000 debt whilst being a student full time, bought a house, all whilst working full time.... it can be done!
  • Does anyone know how long it takes for the card to arrive once deposit is paid? I paid the deposit on monday, was told the card was dispatched on tuesday and it's now friday and wouldn't have thought it'd take this long. And I start uni on sunday :(

I gave all my evidence in on monday, couldn't find my UCAS letter so I took a letter from the uni which had info about my tuition fee, I was told this would be fine and it was photocopied to be sent off, now people have told me that the Co-Op have said they need an actual UCAS letter so I'm a bit worried about that :(
