  • My daughter applied for the Bank account online, completed it successfully. We then went into a branch to take Identification, just in case. We were informed that we needed to get a letter from the University to confirm the start date and it also required the end date in three years time. We have written to the University and now awaiting their reply. It was explained that on all the student accounts that they now require proof of the end date.........i will keep you posted.

I applied for it last Thursday and got a letter today saying that "after careful consideration", they couldn't open an account for me. I'm guessing it's all because I had an unauthorised overdraft of £1.86 on my Nationwide account a year ago before I closed it. So annoyed.

So are you not issued a Visa debit card then if you're charged for using a Visa only cash machine? Similarly, are you protected as you are when using a Visa debit card against companies that go bust etc?

I'm pretty sure they don't charge for using a Visa only cash machine - do visa-only machines even exist?

It may be referring to the charge some private ATMs charge you.

Have you read my posts above? They're referring to ATMs abroad.

If you're accepted you'll get the same as everyone else, £1,400.

  • I am a post-grad student in my second year and I applied for a Co-op account by chance a week before it was selected as top pick by MSE. As far as I know, all full-time post-grads are eligible as well as undergrads. The reason I applied was that I already had a student account with Santander but all they would give me as an overdraft limit was £250. I applied 3 times over 7 months for an increase and it was always denied. On my final request they removed my overdraft altogether hence my Co-op application. I'm so glad I decided to switch! The Co-op application was similar to other student accounts although you do get an initial decision very quickly. I found it a bit strange that you have to deposit £300 before they'll send your card but when I did they sent the card promtly and activated my overdraft. They even set the limit to the second year amount (£1700).

You need to phone them to set up telephone and internet banking (AFTER receiving your card) but they are very helpful and overall I'm very impressed.

I got the Co-op account on my 3rd application. I already have a normal current account with them with a seldom used.

My card came soon after getting my acceptance email. The thing is, it isn't a proper visa debit. It's their re-branded electron so it doesn't have a cheque guarantee and can't be used offline (unlike my co-op visa debit on my current account).

Both my accounts are visible on my online account when I log in using only one of the account details.

I haven't got my overdraft yet as I haven't put any money in yet.

PS I am a mature postgraduate student and some of the other banks wouldn't give me the student a/c but no problem with smile.
Got a visa debit and visa credit cards and card to get money out of my savings account - which is where I put the money they lend me at 0%
