Giving up fizzy drinks?

  • I used to have a massive full fat coke and coffee habit, it was all I used to drink. I'd have 2 spoons of coffee and 2 sugars in each cup of coffee, and could easily put away a 2 litre bottle of coke a day too

how did I stop?? I got pregnant ;):D I went right off coke throughout my whole pregnancy, it used to make me feel really sick. and obviously I had to go on the decaff coffee, and I easily cut down to one spoon of each (coffee and sugar). I don't remember any particular withdrawals, but I was all over the place with being pregnant so if there were any, I probably just put it down to hormones or something lol. since then I've stuck to decaff coffee, and only drink the odd can of coke when I get a real craving for it, which isn't all that often now.

my OH still has his coffee the same and if I let him, he'd drink coke all day. but now I just can't afford to buy the volumes of coke that I used to (I used to get the packs of like 30 cans from makro, buying four packs at a time) so he's had to switch to cordial. admitted I do buy ribena which he makes quite strong - I can't drink it like that, I have to have it really weak - but he says he does feel better for not drinking as much coke. how much he does actually drink only he knows, he buys it on his way to work, but at least he's not drinking it all the time at home now
  • Ive enjoyed reading this thread and it encouraged me to give up dietcoke/pepsi on average i drank about 2-3 ltres per day bottles and cans and decided on the cold turkey approach it coincided with me getting a cold therefore the headaches werent too bad as i was dosed up on cold meds anyway its now been 13 days since ive had a drink of the stuff i feel less sluggish and my DH says im less nippy!!! I opted for a combination of sparkling water 17p for 2lt in asda and tesco and i invested in a Britvia filtre jug £8.89 reduced in tesco and diluted juice and its saving me a fortune on average i was spending about £12 a week on dietcoke/pepsi

dh is currently giving up his diet coke habit, partly for health and partly for money!
he 'cant drink water' so he's on smart-price tomato juice and/or orange juice. he denies there's any difference, but as the one who lives with him, his moods are better, and the dry hrd skin on his hands/fingers has cleared up, skin is softer/clearer.( i think i've seen gillian mckeith talking about that with cola, on tv)

I am currently following a friends blog as they struggle with giving up diet coke and also dieting, I think they are following something called the Lighterlife Diet.

They did some research on the Internet of the effects of Diet Coke and Aspartame and all the effects of the addiction. They have replaced the 2 litres of diet coke they were drinking every day with water or milk shakes.

Check out this site for side effects of aspartame, very scary stuff:

  • Just don't buy any, that way the temptation will not be there.

Can recommend not drinking any fizzy drinks, no swollen stomach, no pain in the stomach, and no weight gain. We now drink fruit juices and flavoured waters and organic milk, and yes we are a lot healthier and my teenager, not so moody!!!!!

Take care from across the pond.
  • If you're gonna go for it then I suggest cold turkey - I cold turkied with all caffiene based drinks when I found out I was expecting my first baby, and after the first couple of days you forget all about it.
However, another perspective if that if you really enjoy a glass of DC and don't want littlie to drink it, then just say it's mummy's drink and he wouldn't like it and give him his own drink, the same as if you had a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. It's not really a particularly sinful vice IMHO, and if it's a little treat that you enjoy then I think it's a shame to give it up - if we follow that logically then we'd all be on diluted fruit juice, cold herbal tea, milk or water (I am a mean mummy and those are the only options the littlies have in terms of drinks!).
I think as an adult you are entitled to adult pleasures ( :D sorry, that maybe wasn't particularly good phrasing), and IMHO that includes a glass of DC when the mood takes you. My vice is boiled sweets, particularly sherbert lemons - the littlies do see me munching, but I just tell them they're mummy's and not for littlies and they're fine with that.

I wanted to bump this thread as I am concerned about my kids drinking juice with aspartame and I am a bit of a diet coke junkie. We have been talking about it a bit on the flylady forum and by reading the links people have posted I found out it can actually make you fat! Well, I am what the medical profession call obese (I hate that word), and I am worried about my kids, diluting juice, yoghurts, it is hard to get away from the stuff.

So my question is, What do you give your kids to drink? Fruit juices are fine but contain a lot of sugar, not too good for their teeth. My teenage DD loves water with ice, but the younger one would rather drink fresh orange all day. Do you think if I diluted it with sparkling mineral water it would be better?

    What do you all think?

    Hi

I have a embrassing addiction; Diet coke & hubby is just as bad with diet lemonade. Between us we must get through a litre a day:o:o although lately I have been watering it down by about 1/4.

Any adivce on stopping? Is it better to go cold turkey or will we be more successful in the long term if we do it gradually?

We have always reasoned that we don't have any other vices so this was OK but I don't want our 1 year old to start joining in & we must obviously lead by example!

    Thanks:o

I used to drink loads of this stuff. Now I can't stand the taste. I stopped without any problems at all. Just remember that aspartame and saccharin are actually very bad for you. I also have never bought any fizzy drinks for my children - their favourite drink is water.

Aspartame is very bad for you, and as you say all these "diet" things actually make you fat. It's not difficult to avoid aspartame. The only thing in our house with it in is children's medicine, which they very rarely have anyway.

My children have water, and my son has a smoothie in his lunchbox each day. Fruit juices (as long as they are pure and not the "juice drink" type) count towards the 5 a day - but only once no matter how much you drink. It would probably be better to start diluting the juice for your younger one until she gets used to a less strong taste, and then maybe encourage her to drink water. My own children prefer water because when I weaned them I only offered them water to drink instead of juices and fizzy drinks.
  • We haven't had fizzy pop for years, DS is as high as a kite if he has any. We have squash, pure fruit juices (not those juice drinks) and milkshakes instead.
DS loves fruit smoothies however I make my own and don't buy the shop ones.
I see lots of kids drinking fizzy pop and personally I think it should be banned because it so bad for you.
