I stopped DH buying loads of fizzy lemonade last year, what made it worse was he was drinking it mainly in the night-why he never out-grew his need for a drink in the night I don't know  our young kids are better at going thru the night without waking for a drink than he is.

Anyway I made him change to fizzy water instead, cos he told me it was the coldness and the fizz that he liked.

Lilibet what about fruit juices, fruit or herbal teas instead. I'd also try freezing a bottle of tap water and letting it slowly defrost into a very cold drink to see how you get on with that idea.
  • I have to admit I haven't read every single post so this might have already been suggested.

I dropped all fizzy drinks as part of my diet and switched onto low-sugar squash as water just doesn't taste that good round here (and mineral water is such a rip off).

The trick I found was to start with 3 small bottles of mineral water and after they've been used fill them 3/4 full with water & put in the freezer for 10mins before making the squash.
Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!

I am a Pepsi Max addict, although i am drinking a can of Coke Zero just now as Asda's special offer was not in stock and Zero is the closest thing. I once decided to go cold turkey and i was shocked at the withdrawal symptoms, the sore heads were horrendous, then i started again. At one point i stopped smoking and after a few weeks i noticed that i hadn't had any coke either, i think the 2 addictions go hand in hand for me. Will have to go cold turkey again. I hate diluted squashes and went a week drinking mostly water not long ago and got fed up with it but i am going to have to do it sooner or later.

That's interesting you mention addictions going together. After I gave up smoking, in June 2004, I lost the urge to drink alcohol. Not that I was an alcoholic but I certainly wouldn't have spent a night in a pub without alcohol. I only drank about 3 times after giving up smoking and haven't touched it since. It's a shame it's not much cheaper though because if I go out and have a coke or a J20 it's still the same price as a pint! I do feel better for it though.

And in answer to the locked room - I'd take nothing but an empty cup - disgusting as it sounds, it is better to drink your own products than a diuretic when it comes to survival. It's actually a recommended procedure for shipwreck survivors for example who have no source of fresh water.
    :)

I think you have missed the point that whilst caffeine IS a diuretic it is not potent enough, or present in sufficient amounts to counter the effect that the major ingredient of coke is in fact WATER! ie drinking 1 litre of coke may not hydrate you as much as 1 litre of water, but it will be better than nothing (from a hydration point of view). I think that coke is the devil's own brew, but I think I would be happier with my cola supply than you would be trying to recycle your own fluid!

Also, using 2 litres as a guide is a good idea, but people will get a good amount from the food they eat too so you dont need to overdo it. The body is very good at regulating itself. If I drink a litre over an hour then I find my body just decides to pass it quickly. This keeps my innards healthy. However if you get a little less then your body will retain the water it needs. 2 litres might apply on a hot day (or it might be 3, or 4 especially if you sweat a lot or are overweight etc etc.) but 1 might be enough on a cold day at your desk

Hello my name is Murtle and I used to be a 2ltr diet coke addict :)

Then I moved onto the full fat stuff!!

Now it's merely as a sugar fix on the very odd occasion I buy it. I went cold turkey, and now prefer water, much more refreshing and rehydrating.

My skin feels MUCH better for it!! :)

Lillibet I just wondered how your cold turkey was going?

It took me ages to get over the craving, but now I couldn't bear to touch the stuff.

I don't like plain water either, so I add a very small amount of a high quality Elderflower cordial: the dilution rate is 1:10, so it tastes of something but isn't overpowering.

    Hope it's going OK

    Hi all

    A quick update

Well, I went cold turkey, despite all my assertions to the contary I did have a headache everyday for over a week, I don't know what's in the stuff 'cos I was used to caffine free so it must be the additives:eek:. Anyway, I have now come out the other side, haven't had a drop of diet coke & only a bit of diet lemonade as a mixer (on the OS picnic:o but I'm too much of a lightweight to drink alochol neat). I seem to have settled on apple jucie as a replacement, not ideal but better & I am diluting it well with water, I hope to get onto mostly water soon but don't want to give up fruit juice entierly so am taking it slowly now.

    Thanks guys:T:A:T:A:T:A:T:A:T:A

Edit : Hazel, great minds cross post!

    Well done you.

I use to drink a lot of squash.....until bean came along and my body started to object. So now I'm permanently on 'the strong stuff'...ie, water.

  • Hi Lillibet,

You can get desktop water coolers that take 5L bottles (they sell these in supermarkets for less than £1 I think). Someone I work with swears by hers - I can ask her where she got it from if you like. I don't think it was very expensive maybe around £20-£25.

    HTH.
