:hello: Hi - another Diet Coke addict here! Keep saying I will cut down but never have. I do drink lots of plain water and squash too though.

To all those that need a sugar fix, try this-its healthy and really refreshing!

    Still minty Lemonade

Squeeze half a lemon into a jug of cold water, add approx. 20 leaves of fresh mint, add a spoon of sugar and stir, until the lemon and sugar dissolve. Pour into a glass with ice cubes and enjoy!

They sell this for £3.50 in the local cafes here (anyone been to Bills in Brighton?!), outrageous!

I weaned myself off diet coke on to full-fat Sprite  but at least I've cut down my caffeine intake now :T :D
I'm now trying fizzy water with lime squash in it so it will taste a bit like Sprite and I plan to gradually reduce the amount of squash I put in...:)

    Hi

I was a complete addict of diet coke for ten years. At its peak last month I was drinking 8 cans a day. The cost was unbelieveable I was buying the £7.24 pack and also more throughout the week. Then after continuous nagging from my dh and my little daughter taking sneaky drinks I thought this is it. But the total crunch was when I looked up Aspartame. This causes cancer of the brain. Please google it and make the right decision. I gave up on the 20th March and after two days of headaches and lots of lemonade (not the diet variety as that as Aspartame) I'm now a fully committed Ribena drinker! :-)

You can do it Lilibet !!!! Use your children as the anchor. Do you want them drinking this rubbish when their older?

    All the best

So I am going to lock you in a room and you have a choice. You can take a bottle of coke with you or nothing. Which of these two choices will keep you alive the longest?

Your statement above is rubbish, as is the drivel on the website you link to!

    For more sense, see http://www.nutritionaustralia.org/Food_Facts/FAQ/optimal_hydration_faq.asp

That website is not just drivel - it's dangerous drivel. Anyone who suggests that Multiple Sclerosis can be cured by drinking water should probably be locked up for their own safety.

Most fizzy drinks are bung full of sugar and therefore heavy in calories. However, if you like something fizzy, why not buy sparkling mineral water and use it to dilute fruit juice. That way you still get the fizz without all the sugar. Sparkling mineral water also makes a very refreshing drink when you mix it with elderflower cordial.

I gave up all fizzy drinks for health reasons. I have an over-sensitive baldder :o and I get quite severe and painful bladder spasms from only 1 glass of fizzy juice. I had to cut out fruit juice too! I drink either water or weak sugar free squash (which I wonder how bad that is for teeth, but never mind) and I limit myself to 2 mugs of coffee a day (any less and I'd go mad!). I do have to drink a lot to keep my urine pale. TMI??? Have to avoid some foods too.

I went cold turkey from Irn Bru. Though it was easier as the spasms stopped and I could put up with a headache :T

I do still get cravings for the fizzzzzzzzz..... The feel of a cold glass of Irn Bru or cola or lemonade as you glug glug glug it down. But I just think of what will happen if I do. Pain and my belly will swell up like a baloon.
  • My daughter and I have just made the mint lemonade recommended here and she thought it was great getting leaves out of the garden for her drink! She's never allowed fizzy anyway.
    Thanks

Fizzy drinks can lead to osteoporosis - but according to this BBC article
American researchers have linked the caffeine in the fizzy drinks to loss of bone density.
Okay then folks - who is going to own up to a massive Red Bull addiction?????????????

We mainly drink diluted fruit juice (I find it too sweet) or plain water - and I did read somewhere that so-called "pure" fruit juice labelled as being only fruit juice can in fact have up to 15% sugar added - just Googled to try to find it - but no luck - anyway makes you think!
Perhaps we should all stick to water!!
  • Hi, I have drank diet coke everyday for the last 18 years! This has averaged out at apx 4 cans per day. Bottles didnt interest me as the cans give you more fizz!
I have tried to give up before by reducing intake and suffered headaches and low mood.
Two weeks ago I decided enough was enough and just stopped completley. After a couple of days the withdrawals went and I feel fine.
Yesterday I thought I would treat myself to a can....I took one sip, it tasted disgusting and I poured it down the sink!
I think my relationship with diet coke is well and truely over!
I think the only way to give it up is to go cold turkey, you will get through it!
    Good Luck!
