And in the eyes of a layman just wrong!

It is of course very wrong. Unfortunately UK law makes it very legal. It didn't even start at XL, there are countless companies in the 1990s this lot were involved with. Also, the public, and importantly travel agents, will always book the cheapest seats, and thats how these companies get going.

It needds either the regulator to point blank refuse to issue them an ATOL, and/or travel agents to have a greater apreciation of their own industry and refuse to book with companies involving these guys. Sadly I can't see either happening.

I've already heard that the guys behind Viking are already looking at setting up their own flight selling arm with an ATOL. And so history repeasts itself again.
  • If anyone here can find me a holiday to any beach destination from any Northern Airport from Sat 21 Aug for 7 nights for two people and under £800 I will do favours beyond your imagination, ha ha ha.

Seriously, my first proper holiday in 6 years and my first visit to Turkey down the pan. And I live under a flight path so I've got to listen to the sound of smug, clever and rich travellers who booked a reputable airline zooming overhead 24/7. totally gutted.
Why do mice have such small balls?
Because so few of them can dance.

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Some of us not in the travel industry may not be aware of that.... and some of us do not have the luxury - nor the money - to be picky about who we book with. Some of us have had to save up for an entire year to be able to afford our first oversea's holiday!

I do have a right to be angry... not only have I lost all of my savings in this holiday fiasco, I've also got to explain to my stepson, that the holiday he's been looking forward to since this time last year, won't be going ahead and we won't even be able to afford a day at a theme park to make up for it! Is this fair?

Whilst losing a holiday is by no means a pleasant experience, remember that there will be people here who, through no fault of their own, are now facing up to telling their family that they might not be able to afford the roof above their heads.

Travel in Europe has, in many respects, become unsustainably cheap. One local travel agent was offering an all-inclusive week in Turkey for £280 not that long ago - it's hardly surprising that operators are going to the wall with pricing models like that.

If your with Natwest, i would recommend to upgrade to advantage gold for the £12 per monnth, and use there travel service to beat any price.

If you joined today, you could use it tomorrow & get free travel insurance.

With all due respect, I have alot of compassion for those people who are now facing having no job this morning. I know how they feel as I've been on the other side of the coin when a company I worked for went bust overnight - it's a scary thing to wake up to!

On the flip side, I've worked hard in the last 18 months to not only pay off the majority of my £12000 debt (now down to less than £3000) but I've also managed for the first time in 6 years to afford my first family holiday! That's why I'm angry!
  • We got the email at 9:30 last night, went straight onto thomson and managed to get flights same day leaving an hour later for £982 this is £198 less than we paid originally with KISS. Checking the exact same flight now and the cost is now £1,355.92, an increase of nearly £400 overnight.

We are fortunate that we have the money around to rebook flights and I feel for those that aren't in the position. The main problem here as I see it is this, you pay for your holiday in advance however the tour operators do not pay the airlines/hotels until the last possible minute. When I paid KISS airlines they booked me on a Koral Blue flight, now if they had paid Koral Blue when I paid them I wouldn't have a problem. This is exact reason why so many people were told to pay for their hotel twice in Turkey when goldtrail sunk.
  • I'm another one who booked a package through Flight Options and am now wondering where to go from here and I'd appreciate any advice.

I booked a one week package holiday of a flight and hotel to Crete via Lastminute.com in July. I received an email confirmation and also a telephone call from Flight Options and was assured that it was fully ATOL and ABTA protected and I have already paid the full amount on my Visa debit card. Will I be able to do the section 75 thing despite having paid with a debit rather than credit card or will I have to go through the CAA? How do I claim from the CAA or should I go through Lastminute.com instead?

    Thanks.

Section 75 doesn't apply to dedit cards, only credit

You'll have to download a 7 page claim form from the CAA site, I can't post a link just search google for "CAA ATOL claim form"

It should take around 6 weeks for refund but can expect longer with 60,000-70,000 people about to claim too.

If you can get new flights sooner rather than later as you can see by my example above, airlines are not beyond profiteering.
  • Oh and in case anyone was due to fly from east midlands to sharm on the 29th sep, the alternative flight I found is TOM 898... it's only an hour later and you'll get another half day in sharm on the 6th (which can only be good )
