I was in the opposite position, I was the girlfriend. My now husband's mum and dad very graciously said that I could move in with them when my accomodation fell through. I had only been dating my now husband for less than a year.

I was in uni and my husband was (still is) in a well paid career. So initally they were only charging him for room and board. When I moved in, I offered to pay them something each month for room and boarded but they wouldn't have it! :)

This was until about a couple of months had passed and they couldn't see that having an extra person in the house really made a difference to water and power use, food bills etc. So they in the end asked me if I wouldn't mind paying for room and board...oh course it was no problem. I'm using it, I should pay.

I think my advice to you is, see how the months go on. It's great they do all their own chores so you aren't having to do it for them. But, you may find that the extra person in the house will make a difference to your bills.

hope this helps and good luck!

    Hi

My son and his fiancee live with me. She was having problems at home and I offered for her to come and stay with us while she worked it out.

Three years later, they have nowhere else to go but it is working out very well.

They give me between them £125 pw but that covers everything - I even pay for the car tax and insurance on a car I share with my son.

It covers electricity, gas, water, council tax, cable, broadband, food etc (though they do get some of their own messages!)

The way I look at it is you cannot live anywhere for nothing - unless you go on the streets. I wish I did not have to charge them that much but it only covers what they use and I need the contribution as I have been a single parent for years and don't earn a great deal.

I actually enjoy their company and we all get on well - while respecting each others need for space etc.

I think with the recession, high rents, no prospect of getting mortgages, we will see more and more families living like this.

Thanks penny pincher, she is already staying 4-5 nights a week and has lots of stuff here. They are both students which is why we wouldn't charge anything.
Thanks rmiller, we will keep an eye on bills. It's good to hear a positive story.
Thanks Larmy16, I agree that more families will live like this in the future. I'm sure your son and fiancee appreciate what you are doing for them.
