It's good that Scotland has a say in the matter.
Does England expects Wales to do as it's told?

The actual time number we use is irrelevant as the amount of daylight will not change. Animals do not understand clocks so they do not care what time we say it is when we let them out. If you are at the extreme north of the country why not start schools an hour later to avoid a dark start. You will no doubt have to come home in the dark anyway.

Apologies from a newbite but, I have to remind people that all these variations on summertime, or keeping the same time all year round, isn't legally possible.

European Directive 2000/84/EC makes summertime from March to October a requirement for all EU countries with only exceptions for "overseas territories"... maybe that is Scotland...

So, we have to pick a time zone (the options are GMT and CET), and that time zone must have summertime included. So yes, the MSE "vote" is a bit misleading.

I disagree and must state that the new government can politely tell the EU to get stuffed. As far as we're concerned (and I mean the British public) it is an economic trading zone only and their ideas on law should mean little or nothing.

Anyway we are 'overseas' from Brussels aren't we? but then so is Ireland.

Who are they to tell us what laws to have and not? They appear to dictate all manner of law and policy; everything from capital punishment to metric units and regulate even as far as what our law should be to such issues as acceptance & toleration of alien religions and alien cultures.

What difference does the time zone make for trade as the we trade with the US, China, India and other commonwealth countries with no major problems.

I am for a complete withdrawal from the EU and remind you that all the citizens of this country ever agreed to was a common market, and that's that. NOT a complete socialist federal state which it is now trying to become.

Although the EU does have some benefits like it can be a more just and sensible last option particularly with IMHO the often very biased, loaded and corrupt English court system. However on whole the EU has brought more problems than it's solved; and thus they can take back the "asylum seekers" NHS tourists like foreign AIDs sufferers etc and other nasty criminal infestations that they've sent through either directly or indirectly.

Come on Cameron start the promised programme please NOW!

I think some people are exaggerating the events of the previous attempt at this. Not neccessarily deliberatly.

While I wasn't born at that time it doesn't mean I can't imagine what it'd be like. We can all imagine going to school/work an hour earlier and coming home an hour earlier.

Another thing I think people are overlooking is how much earlier the rush hour starts now compared to what it would have been like in the 70's. We don't hear many complaints now, but I bet most people leave the house close to an hour earlier than their 70's counterparts, so they're effectively experiencing the same journey as someone who lived through the 70's shift.

While people are focused on the mornings being dark, they pretty much are now. Given that most of us are in work or school a dark morning probably won't make a difference but a lighter evening would be massive. In the depths of winter it might not make much difference but we'd get october and most of november back.

It's easy to say people should just get up ealier but most people probably can't adjust their working hours if they wanted to work an hour early. I'm sure a lot of people would happily work 8am-4pm in the winter if they were offered the chance.

Bizarre - people can't get up early enough so they demand the clocks change!

I'm not sure how this can be linked to people not being able to get up early enough.

Leave it as it is. As has already been said, we get the same number of daylight hours no matter what. If you object to lighter mornings / darker evenings, then just get up an hour earlier! That way you can walk the dog / do the gardening / relax with a coffee before work and still enjoy the daylight. Then you go to bed a little earlier and save all that electricity!

I just wish we would stick to either BST or GMT all the year around.
Why on earth is it necessary to keep changing the clocks every six months?
Someone here suggests that as America has four time zones, we should be able to cope, but as we are such a small island in comparison, one time all year around should be considered.
Unfortunately, it’s the folk up north who object the most, and as we have so many of them in Parliament looking after their interests it’s unlikely that the argument to keep to one time will succeed.
I have several clocks in the house (TV, computer, recorder etc.) that automatically adjust to the new time but I also have to adjust the time on the microwave, several clocks, central heating, car, electric oven, several watches etc. which is absolutely ridiculous. I imagine that many of you feel the same about this tiresome routine.
It seems that every year at this time someone launches a campaign to stop changing the time either one way or another. This year it’s the ’Daily Express’, last year it was ‘Richard and Judy’. They always fail. So don’t hold your breath.

I remember at the time being told that joining the common market would mean no more wars, so that's why people were in favour of it.

But them what would happen to the parents who have to take young children to school before they go to work, and pick them up again after work?

They could vary their working hours.

I was interested to see the results so far. However, it strikes me that the results should also show the Scotland votes entirely separately from the England & Wales votes. In other words, as a percentage of the Scottish only total votes. So far 49% of people who live in Scotland have voted not to put the clocks back; 39% have voted to put them back.

(I'm not in Scotland - or Scottish - and voted "Don't put the clocks back")

I was at primary school during the previous trial and managed to travel across Glasgow by foot and public transport without incident. We were given reflective armbands at school and you could buy reflective schoolbags and sashes etc. This was old style orange reflective not the modern hi vis so that’s one thing improved right of the bat.
