  • Made the sweet and sour chicken balls tonight (we also have the hard-to-please in-laws staying) and it was a success with everyone! Would perhaps leave some of the sugar out of teh sauce - it was very, very sweet.

Bought the book on Wednesday and did the lamb donor kebab tonight.

    OMG!!

It was soooooo good! I couldn't believe how easy the recipe was.

Even hubby was a bit taken aback when he tasted it. He thought it was spot on.

The cats were all over us trying to get some too :D

Made us all Big Macs last night. They were spot on!
I think I needed to make the burgers a bit thinner (you can't see them in my pic as they'd shrunk!). I didn't use sesame seed buns either as DS2 isn't keen on them. I need to find some different buns next time as I used Warburtons sliced bread rolls but they were just too soft and were collapsing towards the end! :o TBH I think it is the Special Burger Sauce that made it so like a McD's.

Can I ask - how easy were these to make or were they a big of a faff?? I keep thinking about it but the sauce looks like it might be a bit fiddly to make and I'm not sure which rolls to use for the best so have avoided trying so far :rotfl:
I do love them though and on the odd occaision we can get to the golden arches (none even remotely close) then this is what I go for!!

They were more of a faff than the usual cheese burgers I make from scratch!
TBH the sauce was pretty easy - just mayo, mustard, ketchup and chopped gherkin - mix together, then leave in fridge for an hour. I have a mini food processor so I used that to finely chop the gherkins and then I whizzed it all together in there although that wasn't really necessary as that could be done in a bowl.

I also used my mini F/P to finely chop the onion.
The time consuming bit was shaping the burgers - you then have to leave them in the fridge for at least an hour. I hadn't read the recipe before so dinner was a bit later than usual! :o I usually make my own burgers anyway but I suppose you could use shop bought to save time.

I would certainly do them again. As with anything, once you've done it once it gets quicker and easier.
Just need to find the perfect buns now. (Don't we all...?);)

Clutterfree - thanks for that. I'm fine with making the burgers and chilling as I make my own aswell but also do the breakfast muffins from this book. I find it easier to make them the day before and chill overnight tbh. Really need to give them a go - wasnt sure about the finely chopped onion part but I think I am picturing the originals too much and should just stop thinking and do :D

As for the search for the perfect buns - if you find them you'll need to share the secret winking0071.gif

Thanks for the link - I'm ok with the burger/sausage part though as I quite often make my own bugers ;)

  • Clutter free... I've made food from the book many times now... did you shred your lettuce?

I found grating lettuce really works well... my box grater had a slicer slide (as opposed to normal grating) and I find that works a treat in making it lovely and fine just like you would get from the takeaway!
