Ooh tried these onion bhajis at the weekend and they are fab!! thanks for the link.
I used normal olive oil instead of rapeseed as the cheapest bottle I good find in tescos was £5 !!! Lot of money just for drizzling.
Also had to substitute the chickpea flour for plain flour as my tescos didnt stock the chickpea flour.....
but they were a great success!! :T
you might find it under its more usual name of Gram flour, it's usually in the ethnic foods section, HTH :)

Tesco's ordinary vegetable oil is actually rapeseed oil. ;)

Ahh thats brilliant, thankyou for that, will get them for next time :T
  • Well, my book came on Saturday. I didn't know where to put my eyes first :p The no pictures kind of puts me off which is weird. Didn't have myself down as a visual person at all.

Anyway, got myself to the Chinese supermarket and some asian shops and got as much as I could (looked like a total newbie with my book in hand and all the other shoppers had the info in their heads:o)

The only thing I couldn't find anywhere was onion powder so I went with the majority and got onion granules. I got a garlic & ginger paste for £1.20 which was great. I also got umpteen 100g sachets of things for as little as 59 p each.

So, I've settled for the Chicken Shashlik Kebab (p32) and it's marinating as we speak. Looking forward to dinner tonight. Now to go try the kebab sauces and pitta bread.

The lamb doner seems the most popular so I'd better get myself some soon. Will "rent a teen" later to get pictures up (someone should really invent that! )

  • Ok ...so I bought the book too!! went through it and wrote me a big list of all the ingredients needed for my fave receipes.
Spent approx £30 in Asda getting all the herbs/spices etc!!

So far I have made the vegetable rolls, chinese style curry sauce and egg fried rice. Apart from the spring rolls looking a bit dodgy - it all tasted lovely! The curry sauce was a bit hot on account of over measuring 1/4 teaspoon of curry!! lol

And last night we had home made fish n chips - yummmmmmmmmmm. The batter was a bit thick but still yummy.

A success so far me thinks!!

Thanks OP for a great find and recommendation!!

  • I made the traditional chicken curry last night and it was lovely - made a quorn one for hubby and also added a bit more spice. I am doing the donner kebab tonight - cant wait!

I am going to give the chinese a go at the weekend - so far my kids havent disliked anything!

This is a YouTube vid that I just found showing how to make Paratha which may be of use to all of us who are having a go at the Indian recipes as this one isn't in the book.

I have never tried it never mind make it but I think I will have a go at the weekend.

The video maker is a bit mad which makes for interesting viewing, off to take a look at a few of her other vids. :D
