Btw, anyone who likes to make fajitas or enchiladas should try Swan's fajita spice mix... It's by far the best I've ever tasted!

Her chilli con carne is also a firm favourite and all my family members now ask for the recipe!

    awww, thanks Kevie :o:o:o

(have to confess I can't claim the fajita mix as my own though, I got it from a site that claims it's Taco Bell's secret mix :shhh: although I think I tweaked it & added a bit more cummin)

  • Hi everyone :)

I've been reading this thread with interest for some time now and am sorry that it's taken so long for me to come and join in the conversation!

My name's Kenny McGovern and i'm the author of The Takeaway Secret (and the sequel 'More Takeaway Secrets') - I just wanted to come on and thank you all for supporting the book and for contributing to such an excellent thread - seeing the pictures many of you have posted of the dishes you've cooked has been so exciting for me and I really can't thank you all enough for taking the time to post them.

I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have but really I just wanted to thank the Money Saving Expert site, and forum members, for providing me with so much feedback and such an interesting read, it's been great to find out what people think of the recipes and as I said above, seeing the pictures of your food has been brilliant too.

    So, in short, thank you!

    Thanks for inspiring us all!

I'm a big fan especially of your curries, the whole premise of the base curry makes cooking a quick evening meal so very easy. And I never thought I'd find myself making my own naan bread!

  • Daughter's last day of work experience tomorrow, so she's taking in Millie's-style-cookies... and I think she's going to claim she baked them herself when in fact the only thing she did was lick the beater. Ho ho ho.

Between the new Indian restaurant in the village (lovely but expensive) and this book (not very expensive at all), I now eat curry after a lifetime of avoiding it like it was poison. Being able to tweak the recipes to up the flavours I like and turn down those I don't means that I can tailor a curry to my tastes and grow to tolerate them spices I used to avoid. The book has given me far more choice and control than a jar of sauce ever did.

Have no idea if it tastes anything like the takeaway's curry though :rotfl:
  • Hi Kenny

I'm a huge fan of your first book - family favourites are your tikka marinade, chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce, curry sauce and egg fried rice and fettucini with bacon and mushrooms.

I have the second book out from the library just now (very money saving ;) ) and I've bookmarked recipes to try out. We tried the mexican piri piri chicken with spicy rice this week and loved it so I'll definitely be buying this book too.

The portion sizes seem large to me which makes it a bit of trial and error when scaling up recipes for 3 or 4 people. I wouldn't say we have small appetites but I usually find that doubling a recipe which is for 1 person is enough for 3 adults.

Wishing you success - and do you have another book in the pipeline?
