Just a heads up for the donner kebab lovers. The food slicer discussed much earlier in this thread is now on offer at Argos again for £24.99, saving £10.
I just bought two, one for my mum who spends a fortune on cold-cuts and was looking out for one.
Look for the 'Cookworks Food Slice' on Argos website.
I've only used it on a half joint of roast pork and it worked great - perfect uniform slices.
The "Elf and Safety" on button is a pain in the bum though, having to keep it unlocked and pressed so only leaving you with one hand free. I will be opening the unit up and bypassing this "feature" as soon as I get hold of a wing spanner security bit to fit the irritating screw preventing me doing this. humph!0 -
If you are able to get to a Lidl, they do a huge jar of gherkins for £1.39 (and the gherkins are big too!) and they are delicious, and very 'dilly'. I use these whenever I make burgers.
I was going to suggest the Lidl gherkins too. To me they taste nicer than the Aldi and the big supermarkets.
However, I prefer the "middle size" gherkins. The massive ones in that huge jar just don't taste right to me. I like to eat gherkins whole as a snack and I think the taste is more concentrated in the smaller ones.
But yes, plenty of Dill in the Lidl gherkins (there's a pun there somewhere I'm sure).0 -
:rotfl::rotfl: :rotfl:Good job we don't all like the same thing - for me the big jar gherkins are exactly like the gherkins sold in chip shops, and believe me, I have eaten more than my fair share of those! I could demolish a jar in a sitting. Thankfully, self preservation kicks in, lord alone knows what would happen if I did that!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0

Maybe I just had a not so good batch with the huge Lidl jar (which is very impressive I must say, lol!).
I also recently tried the Aldi "Haywoods?" brand again it it was much nicer then the previous jar I had.
I guess things may be hit and miss. Will try those banging 'normous Gherkins again next time I'm in Lidl.
Also, I never knew Chippies did gherkins? You must be a true cucumberphile to even get them from the chippy... erm.. Mrs Chip...

Good grief Calisto - you surely have not frequented the right chippies!
I was brought up from an early age with the delights of a portion of finest fish and chips with the vital accompanyment of a chip shop gherkin aka 'wally' :rotfl: The king of curcurbits, no chippy tea is complete without one.
And yes... the clues are there (namewise!).
Those jars are a wonder, so useful for so many things - emergency fish bowl being the least of them!
ETA -Just seen your location - perhaps the gherkin has not made it so far north - and def would not go with gravy!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -

Aha! A Southerner I assume?. Oy Oy Savaloy! (I believe a "sav" is some kind of red sausage processed meat delight, like a decent hotdog?). Northern chippies have sausages instead... You can have them in batter.
With a Fish'n'chip dinner, there are so many chips that any other veg is really not needed, unless it is chinese curry sauce...*
Deep-fried "pie-in-fat" is a common secret, but I once asked my local Chinese chippy owner (a granny who has served 2 generations no less), to dip the already baked Hollands steak pie into the fish batter and then deep-fry it. She thought I was drunk and crazy and refused me! Ok, I was slightly inebriated, but I wasn't crazy... And in the cold light of day I really want to try a Pie Fritter!!! lol! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Mrs Chippy would you entertain such? I think it would taste great between two slices of bread and butter with brown sauce.
* ETA: For proper chippy curry sauce - go to the Chinese store and look for Goldfish brand - I like the Spicy version. Though I have noticed the milder one is even now sold in Tesco in the ethnic foods section. Just add a bit of hot chilli powder to make it sneezeworthy and just like the curry and chips we all adored after a night out.0 -
Yus my dear, a soft southerner, weaned on savs with brown sauce, and proud of it! :rotfl:I don't know about 'decent', well not these days, anyway.
We will have none of that double-dipped pie-frying mucky talk here, the chinese know more than they let on, and you had a lucky escape.
We have sausages down here too, in batter as well. Oh yes we know how to induce a heart attack too, you don't know everything up north!
Curry sauce is something of a new kid on the block, but vital to the profitability of the modern-day purveyor of fried goods - and yes Goldfish is a delightful pot of curryness. Not enough margin in it though.
