My copy of the book is on the way, but I'm getting the ingredients together to make the doner kebabs.
Like others here I couldn't find the onion and garlic powders in the supermarkets, so Googled and found some at healthysupplies.co.uk.

Not a bad price with postage and was just delivered and included a plastic clamp thingy to seal open bags :T So I can recommend them if you need the ingredients.*

I made the choc chip cookies again. makes way more than the 10-12 stated. suppose it depends ow much you put for each one but it makes me double the amount! Means you can go back for seconds without feeling guilty
  • At least with the book one can control the qaulity aspect of the ingredients like free range chicken, organic vegetables etc, one cannot if one is taking away. Learning
to cook should therefore be deemed an essential skill if one is to save money buy cookery DIY.

Apologies if this question has already been posted, as I only spotted this thread today, and I'm afraid that I only managed to read part way through all of the posts - but has anyone tried the KFC chicken yet? as it's my absolute favourite, and despite the many claims of various recipes to be the real thing, it never quite is. Thanks for any tips.

Made the doner kebabs tonight, was nice, but the pita bread (shop bought) was a pain to cut open, just fell to bits!
How the hell do you make em into a nice pocket?

I put the pitta in the toaster - not to toast but to warm through. Then when puffed out a bit they should slice open easily.

Just keep an eye on them and keep checking, and don't let them toast - they want to be soft and warm, not dry and toasted if you see what I mean.
  • re pitta falling to bits.....i've found the ones from mr t were like this.
I like the ones from lidl coz they have a long sell by date and stay soft when warmed up.

I shove my pitta in straight from the freezer. They defrost and warm - and are easy to slice.

RE: Opening pitta without tearing them. This is my dirty secret...

After warming up, make two incisions on the ends of the top side and then blow through one of the holes. This will guarantee a nice unsplit pitta. Watch you don't burn your hand with the escaping steam. ;)

It will balloon open, you can then slice the top open from one hole to the other.

I wouldn't be happy seeing Stavros do this in the kebab shop though! lol! :rotfl:
