Ok as the title says How to stop a neighbour from throwing their rubbish over the hedge.

This is prob going to be a long one so i'll apoligise now.

Bit of a starnge one really but at my dads house someone is throwing rubbish and cigarette butts up onto the top of his heges (about 8ft high) and on over into the garden for about the past two years now.

He thought it was school kids to begin with but its not. Its actually a neighbour from around the corner (he thinks thats were they live he's not 100% sure).

Now he worked this out by hiding a camera in his hedge point down the street, I warned him he's not allowed to do this but theres no talking to him sometimes and he wanted to work out who on earth it was, which I can understand.

Turns out its an old guy out walking his dog at 1am every morning and as he walks past dad he chucks his rubbish and cigarete butts up onto the hedge or it comes on over into the garden. Does'nt sound like much but you should see the amount of rubbish this guys throwing over.

Now my dad has weeks and weeks of video of the guy going up the street and doing this, so about a month ago my dad decides to lie in wait in the garden to see if the guy does it, but he looks in the garden first sees dad and doesn't (you also see him looking all around him on the video everytime checking no one is about before he does it).

The next night dad lies in wait again and the bloke spots him again so doesn't do it, but dad goes out and confronts him and asks him not to do as he is aware it is him the bloke denies it 100% and has been continuing to throw his rubbish up and over.

So dad rang the council and theres nothing they can do, we are at a loss as to how he can get the bloke to stop. He had never seen this person before and its only my dads house he is doing this on as dad checked with all the other neighbours and none of them are getting any rubbish chucked over...

So really what I'm asking if you've made it to the end is.. Has anyone got any ideas how on earth you could get this to stop ???

  • Start chucking it back on his garden?

(sorry that's probably not a very helpful post)

Save it all up, at before 1 am hide near his house and while he is away to throw his rubbish into the garden post all the saved rubbish through his letterbox.

my initial thoughts although not sure if it would have any impact

is for you/your dad to wait one evening and follow said man around whilst he walks his dog untill he eventually goes home so you then know where he lives, although this might not do anything in the long run might make him uncomfortable enough to stop doing it as he would know you know where he lives. - this could back fire however as he then might go even further out of his way to make life bad for your dad

other one was the police might be able to do something in regards harasment or anti social behaviour or littering, give him a warning or the like

quick edit - i personally dont think throwing the rubish back into this guys garden would be a good idea, although it would give you some satisfaction i know, i would just worry that this could start a bit of a 'neighbour war' which coul dget out of hand

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

He doesn't want to start a whole tit for tat war with rubbish, and he's tried to follow the guy home but at 1am in the morning and with nobody else about its not the easiest thing to do with out being very obvious and the guys never going to go straight home or lead my dad back to his, I know I wouldn't if someone was following me, I'd probably be screaming the neighbourhood down lol..

Its all just really bizare, Its a nice quiet, repectable area full of old retiree types. My Dad is 70 and I'm quite sure from looking at the video the guy is around a similar age.

Has your dad got any security lights that would blaze and light the whole area whenever there is movement? It could put him off to be in the spotlight so to speak??

I would be tempted to have a sprinkler system designed to spray water over the hedge from 12.30 to 1.30 :D

Basically the council said as its happening at that time no one would be able to come out to see it happening and that he could give a witness statement to the council but as nobody knows his name or address they wouldnt even be able to send out a letter warning him about the littering.

He's got the security lights but the tall hedges block any light out onto the street and similarly unless you would be on the wrong side of the hedge your not going to set them off either.

Sprinklers not a bad idea though, i'll have to suggest it.
  • Is he STILL doing it despite your Dad having a word? I thought perhaps that knowing your Dad is aware it is him (and might be lying in wait) would have been enough to stop him in itself.

Yeah still does it everynight. Nobody has any idea why he does it and my Dad swears he's never seen the bloke before in his life.

    Theres now't weirder than folk!!

Instead of a sprinkler system why not get your dad to stand with a hose and soak him through the bushes (or am i just mean?) It works on animals so maybe it will work on a strange old man?
