Correction:
SDi is the non-turbo diesel, great if you only do round town miles.
TDi is the turbo diesel injection 90,105 and 115 BHP version. All silver TDI is the 90bhp, red I is the 105/115bhp version, red D & I is the 130 model and fully red T, D & I is the 150/170bhp model.
PD engines have the higher power 130, 150 & 170BHP.
GTI is the petrol sporty version. But GT TDI is the 105/115 or 130bhp version with the sports suspension and fancy interior spec.
TSI is the turbo + supercharged small petrol engine with big power outputs, but not made at the age you're looking so dont worry about it!
S,SE, CL and GL are trim levels. Except CL and GL versions stopped production with the Mk3. S, SE, Match and GT are the trim levels to look for...in that order.
Hope that clarifies it for you

Just a quick final add-on, I think everyone seems to have covered the trim levels,
the MATCH trim is the final trim for that evolution of golf Mark. It is used to add a lot of extras to cars so the units can be shifted, so you can get all manner of add-ons (alloy wheels, aircon, elec windows, things like that) at a bargin(ish) price.
Think GT comfort for the price of an S or SE trim.0 -

i had to read that a few times for it to sink in! haha.
If i can afford it i might hang in for the GT TDI 130 or if not the TDI 115.... unless anyone has some words of wisdom...?
thanks for your help everyone0 -

That looks a decent car. The mileage seems fine for its age, roughly 10k a year. Just check the service history and make sure the timing belt was done at 60,000 miles. Listen out for suspension creaks, the axel bushes will most likely need changed at this age.0 -

Correct, the I usually stands for Intercooler as there are some turbodiesel engines that don't have an intercooler, such as my old 1994 Passat with the 64bhp Umwelt engine.
Glad to know that the S in SDI stands for suction. I had been struggling to come up with something for the S that wasn't a swear word. Seconding all the people who say to avoid it though. It's a terrible engine and not even efficient for it.0 -
hey people, whats your views on this one?
