VW Golf lettering system

S/SE/GT/GTI are all trim levels, or "levels of nice things" lol
Don't get too hung up on the letters, find a Golf in your price range with the "level of nice things" that suits you, and you can't really go wrong.0 -
Yes S, Match and SE are the refinements of the interior.
As FH says above though, the diesels do have different outputs. You may want to google for reviews. I think 1600 is a "nice" engine, I read the 1400 was too small for the car. If you start going higher it knocks the insurance up.
As Gordon has said above, find the right year, price and engine and then check out the trim

1.6 diesel exist?? I've been looking at the 1.9s
I did a quote on a 2003 GT TDI and it came back at around £600 but that was one quick search and i'm thinking more along the lines of the TDI anyway0 -
1.6 is a petrol unit I believe.0

Not quite on Mk4 Golfs.
The GT TDi is the 130bhp diesel.
The GTi is either a 150 or 180bhp petrol or a 150bhp diesel.
I had the 150bhp diesel as a company car. It was just badged GTi and was a very nice car, quick and 55-60 mpg0 -
SDi must be avoided, it's "suction diesel injection" and is one of the most horrific engines you'll ever buy.
Slow ( I mean....sloooooowwwww), noisy and smokey. It was only used as an economy offering for fleets, who where desperate to have the perceived greatness of VW without paying the price for it. I believe the engine is based on the old VW Umwelt from about 1965.

So if the GTTDI is 130bhp and the GTI is 150bhp, does that mean the upper model is actually the GTI and not he GTTDI as i thought?0 -

Isnt the GTI without a D a petrol model?
Youll be a VW expert by the end of the day
