VW Golf lettering system

I'm looking at buying a second hand golf, more than likely diesel and haven't got a clue what the lettering system (SDI, TDI etc) means

Anyone care to shine some light? Or put them in some kind of order for me?

If you go to VWs own site you can see the difference in the models. S is the basic one, SE more luxurious. If there is a D it means diesel engine. I have an SE TDI :) I think Match is also sometimes used for the more luxurious versions.

i could only find the differences for the current models. im looking at 2002ish

whats the difference between the SE TDI and the GT TDI? and then again those two compared to just the TDI
  • S and SE are the Trim levels... SE being higher than the S..

FSI is the later VW petrol engines and means Fuel Stratified Injection basically direct injection.
The TSI relates to Petrol Engines with the Turbo or Turbo and Supercharger

Have a look on the VW site where it says used cars. You tick on the model and then you can tick on the trims. Have a look and compare the trims.

As far as I understand (and Im blondish) the SE TDI is the same as mine, bit of luxury trim (in my case its the new model so it has self parking aswell ) The GT is the sporty model which costs more to insure :) If they say just TDI then Id guess its the basic model (S).
