Whilst Ormus is right on the button I thought the thread was about Boss White which is fine as a jointing compound for compression joints on either gas or water. Don't really understand why its gone off at a tangent into PTFE.

    Cheers

Because the OP mentions PTFE? ;)

Call my a cynic but I get an uneasy feeling it could be gas if its anything to do with this - really hope i'm wrong!
I thought that thread was a windup TBH and just had that opinion reinforced as it developed - OP never denied it which I would expect if it weren't. If you are right the solution to that "issue" is and always was get gas fitter in, he strips out the whole of the redundant leg and caps off.

only because he mentioned that thats all he's ever used but heard Boss White is better so the question asked is about jointing compound. The question is valid and makes perfect sense if that small reference to PTFE is removed from the question - so its extraneous to the question - n'est pas? :)

I never apply jointing compound to the olive. I just use a tiny smidgen all the way around the rim of the fitting body where the olive makes contact.

Personally I cant see it doing any good whether you put a smidgen of it on the olive or body where it makes contact.

It would move when tightening so the only way of making it work would be to ram the fitting & outside of the pipe full of the stuff.

I assure you it works. It does not move much when tightening, particularly once the olive has begun to grip the pipe. There is absolutely no point in ramming boss white round the outside of the pipe - there is no metal to metal pressure to keep anything in place there. The place where I put the bosswhite is the only part of the fitting where there is a 'renewable' seal and the only place there is any pressure to keep the bosswhite in place. The other seal is on the adjacent edge of the olive to the pipe, but the action of doing up the fitting swages this into place and the seal is permanent rather than renewable.

Ramming the outside of the pipe & inside the fitting will do as much to seal it as putting a dash of it around the olive. So long as the olive is crushed it will do as much to seal, if not more.

As you tighten the olive moves & so does the fitting which more than likely will rub your smear right off where it needs to be.
