Boss white on olives

Sorry to sound stupid, but I've only ever used PTFE and someone has said Boss White would be better.
The main question is where to apply the boss white on the olives. As far as I can tell there are three options.
1. Apply the boss white inside the olive (or directly to the pipe)
2. Apply the boss white outside the olive so it doesn't get in the way of the contact between the olive and the pipe
3. Apply the boss white both inside and outside the olive
Any simple advice greatfully received.
Thanks
Edit: Please try to keep to the question in hand, while opinions on whether to use it at all or not, whether to apply it to the thread, are interesting I'm really looking for the answer to the question. Thanks.

sounds like a recipe - boss white on olives!
Seriously, I use PTFE tape around the copper tube (a little) then on top of the added olive (a couple of turns). This has worked for me over 20 years. You could use boss white, again a smear on the pipe then a smear over the olive after threading on. No doubt each has it's religious desciples!

boss white is only for use on CH systems. boss blue is the correct product for drinking water.
ps
ive used boss white on everything, for yrs now, and never got poisoned yet.Get some gorm.0 -
Thin smear on the outside of the olive although it actually shouldn't be necessary at all.
Bosswhite is fine for gas or water with a comp fitting.

I agree with keystone about it not being necessary to use anything on an olive. However I do generally use a slight smear of Fernox LSX on compression fittings. I have read articles suggesting the use of ptfe tape on the threads of a compression fitting. Why? It is the olive that is sealing the pipe to the fitting, all the threaded nut is doing is to mechanically hold the olive in position. If the olive is doing its job no liquid will ever reach the threaded nut.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
gas fitting use different PTFE tape.
all tapes are not equal!Get some gorm.0 -
Whilst Ormus is right on the button I thought the thread was about Boss White which is fine as a jointing compound for compression joints on either gas or water. Don't really understand why its gone off at a tangent into PTFE.
