ok maybe have was the wrong word, perhaps i choose to park that way, whatever it makes no difference all i ment was i wouldnt go looking into legal action

@neilmcl and your 'rolleyes' i never ment all the time, maye just ask the guy if he could not park there as the guy has a problem with it - much better doing that as a first post of call as opposed to a neighbourhood meeting

Van man has been asked not to park there, but he still does it. That is why neighbours are getting cross. Van man has a drive which can easily accomadate his works vehicle and digger, but he chooses to keep his cars on his drive, the best solution I think would be to park the cars on the road (they would fit outside his house, without causing an obstruction) and park the 'eyesore' on the drive, out of other residents way. He won't do that though as he thinks his cars are safer on the drive out of harms way, he obviously isn't as bothered about his works van being damaged.

He works for our regional water suppliers, I wonder why they don't have somewhere to keep the equipment stored over nights/at weekends and he could just brings the van home?

they probaly do have overnight storage but van man is too lazy to use it. I say good on the neighbours to get together and get this sorted. People here have said live and let live, totally agree, if van man lives by the rules then all and good, it works both ways. OP go to the meeting listen to what the other have to say then make up your miind.

This van with trailer must be about 3 cars length long.

So he has a transit van that is big enough to be capable of towing a trailer with a digger in it that is 3 cars length?

are we talking toy cars here?

I think tolerance is important. Yes, a van and a digger may well be a bit of an eyesore, but if there's no rule stating he can't park his van and trailer there then the residents will just have to put up with it.

On the other hand, he is causing an obstruction. Having to ask your neighbour to move their van every time you want to go out is ridiculous. What if van man is having a shower, or in the garden where the door bell can't be heard, and the neighbour has to wait 20mins and needs to go out in a hurry? Blocking someone's drive is out of order, regardless.

Everyone needs to be tolerant of each others needs. Personally I think your meeting sounds like a bit of a vigilante group...why not invite Mr Van Digger along so he can have his chance to offer a solution, rather than going for secret meetings to deal with him?

You all need to work together to come to a solution, not make one neighbour feel like the rest of the street is against him.

"Trailer is the length of three cars?"

The length of the van and trailer is about equal to the length of three cars.

That seems pretty obvious to me...

Sorry I don't have the exact measurements! Should I go outside and ask him if I can measure?

It was a rough estimate, and yes its a transit van and it has a white trailer with a digger sat on it.

I suspect there is often an insurance aspect to this common practice where commercial vehicles are used for private purposes, i.e. travelling to and from work and often the odd shopping trip. It also appears to be a taxable benefit when the vehicle is provided other than for use by an employee 'on call'.

You obviously have a particular problem in your own street, but it is so bad overall that I think there's a case for local authorities to review the provision of free storage on the public highway for commercial vehicles. A hidden subsidy if ever there was one.

I think there must be some awful drivers/parkers on here if they think what he is doing and where he is parking is acceptable.

When I was taught to drive, I was taught if you couldn't park without causing an obstruction, near a junction, opposite a junction, double yellow's etc... then you found somewhere else to park, you didn't just dump your vehicle where it would be an obstruction to other road users.

How were all the people who think what he is doing is ok taught to drive/park?
