Firewall, do I have one? (Blush)

I bought my grandson a Toshiba laptop. It came with a trial of Norton, which has now expired. I downloaded Avast Personal anti-virus but I'm unsure if there is a Firewall on laptop.

If one is not listed on Programs list, can I assume that there isn't one? For some reason, Zonealarm keeps popping up asking if I wish to upgrade and yet, it is not listed on Progs'.

Is there anything that won't conflict with Avast?

Any advice most welcome.

Thank you. Did it come with Norton or McAfee?

Download, install and run the HijackThis Version 2.0.4 installer and executable and use the Quick Start guide to enable you to produce a log for posting here.

Assuming the laptop has a Windows operating system installed, as long as it is Windows XP (SP2 or higher), Vista or 7 it will have a built-in firewall. You can check if the firewall is running by going to Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall.

Donnie, I think it came with McFee, sorry. I deleted it as I was asked to pay to continue with it.
I have just checked (thanks Nanao) and it appears that there are two Firewalls on Laptop, Windows (on) and Zonealarm (off and I thought I deleted this as it caused problems)
Do I need to stop worrying now?

Want to see what is running on your system before recommending that you install anything else. Did you run the McAfee Removal Tool before installing Avast?

No. I know nothing of that.
Also, why is Zonealarm still on if I deleted it?

I have looked at Task Manager and what do I need to look for to see what is running, is it Processes?

    What you should have done...

a.) Before you Uninstall your current ZA, UNcheck "Load ZA... at startup" (under Overview - Preferences tab)

b.) Reboot the Computer. So that vsmon.exe/TrueVector will be removed from Memory

Then use the Zone Alarm Removal Tool.

Have you created the Recovery Discs for the laptop?
