Old Style Storage

  • Try and pick things up from jumble sales, even plastic boxes with chips can be patched up with gaffer tape. Use storage to double up for other things, eg I have a wicker hamper that I can sit on to dry my hair and I keep toiletries in it.

Can you get a bed with a drawer? Or use under the bed to put a suitcase with things in it?

Also think outside the box when storing items, eg surplus tins of food can go under the bed. I have an old wardrobe in my garage that serves as my tin storage.

  • Around the time this house was built for example, where did they expect the inhabitants to put anything?

The 1930s was inter-war and people owned very little. They probably never expected people to be storing very much ;)

I have a lot of boxes from Au Naturel. I've made labels on the computer to show what's in them :D

Righto, my kitchen is teeny tiny....and I have to cook for six in there. Plus, I have a food storing fetish :rotfl:

Anyway, DH has kindly kicked my dryer out into the shed, so I have space under the worktop, to store washpowder, etc etc.
How can I maximise this space?
Currently, Washpowder/softener/soda live on top of a worktop, and my spuds and onions live on the floor in front of where the dryer used to be.
I'm thinking about a vegetable rack for spuds and onions, but the only ones I can find look tiny and flimsy - the one on lakeland doesn't look like it will hold much?
I'm thinking of something with full drawers on, kind of like this

But cheaper. I can't afford that, or I'd take it. Anyone know where there's something similar?
I've searched Argos, Tesco, Lakeland.....can't think of anywhere else?

  • Does it have to say it's specifically for a kitchen?

    How wide is the gap?

Would it not be ok to just get a normal chest of drawers, eg a bedroom one?

Depends what the rest of your kitchen looks like i guess and whether you are bothered about it matching or fitting exactly in the gap?

Just wide enough to fit a standard TD in Sarah :) I can't be any more specific, as I put my tape measure away and I forgot where LOL.

I need space down the side, so I can fit my wash powders etc down there - I think a chest of drawers will be too wide?

  • In my experience standard drawers have flimsy bottoms, so wouldn’t do well under the weight of vegetables, how about something like this http://www.legendcookshop.co.uk/erol.html#7876x0&&http%3A%252F%252Fwww.google.co.uk%252Fsearch%3Fq%3Dvegetable+rack%26ie%3Dutf-8%26oe%3Dutf-8%26aq%3Dt%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial%26client%3Dfirefox-a or this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8753397/c_1/1|cat_10197552|Storage|10197771/Trail/searchtext%3EDRAWER.htm ?

link to first one won't go straight to the one I meant, it's the 3 tier chrome one, second row on the right for £22.01

  • In case you can't tell, I've got nothing better to do. I just looked up the dimensions of a tumble drier:
    Dimensions - H:850 W:595mm D:550mm

So you need something 50cm wide ish??

I agree with wanting drawers, because I like my potatoes to be in the dark, but are you sure about what it's going to look like? My kitchen cupboards are white so a wooden trolley in a gap would look quite strange, I'm not sure what I would do!

Depends how many vegetables you buy!

Lots. There are six of us LOL.

It will look fine - our doors are wooden :)

Edited to say, Thanks SS - I'm going to show hub that site (when he gets in from sorting the shed, muhahahaha)

  • I've decided, I would get shelves put across and get some nice wicker baskets with lids for putting the veg in!

Or my non sensible answer is to put the TD back, not use it and keep the potatoes inside.
Sorry I couldn't help but my brain is ready for bed. Night :)
