the flat always looks untidy as stuff is lying around

the situation is made worse by the fact that i have bought baskets and lots of sale items to make gift hampers for birthdays, mothers day etc

and our 2 kittens have so much stuff food litter etc to store

we cant afford furniture at the moment

does anyone have any ideas for cheap storage ideas

i am at the end of my tether with messiness

    thanks in advance

Cardboard boxes requested? from supermarkets or small shops, wallpaper offcuts or odd rolls bought cheap. Paper the boxes to tone with your rooms. Veg boxes can be quite shallow and should fit under the bed.

Do you have a double divan bed? Loads of storage underneath - make cut outs in the fabric that covers it and with the valance know one will notice. Your kittens will enjoy hiding in there though!

I have baskets on top of my kitchen units, they look very nice and hide lots.

Not sure how to decribe these - they hang over the a door and have lots of pockets, can be used for shoes or other nic-nacs.

Ikea have big cardboard boxes with lids ( 2 pack for £2.98 I think) - you could fill these then cover them with a piece of fabric or old tablecloth. Or even cover them with nice wallpaper cut-offs, make a feature of them.

I try to be ruthless about how I organise my food cupboards, under sink and sock drawers etc - maximise every inch of space. I keep lots of things in plastic baskets that I can store on top of each other.

We store things under the beds too - bulk buys of toilet rolls, UHT milk, cartons of orange juice etc etc. Useful space and you can quickly see what stock you have left. I tend to buy bulk of regularly used items when they are on special offer.

We are lucky that we have a good understairs space. OH has promised to start shelving this out for me too.

Lots of good ideas already posted. Also register with freecycle.org and ask for storage furniture - chests of drawers, baskets, cupboards etc.
From skips, take bricks and planks of wood to make a book-case. Tell everyone it's a retro look - which it is.:)

I went to Wilko the other day and they have lots of very nice wicker/seagrass storage baskets (including ones with lids). I am a bit 'basket' obsessed though  They also had some really nice furniture (with wicker/seagrass baskets as draws) they were really good value for money and did not look at all cheap.

Under my bed I have plastic storage crates (with lids on) - i have seen these in Tesco too. On the back of my kitchen door I have a pegs where I can hang bags over etc.

  • I live in 2 bed flat that was probably built in the 1930s. I have terrible problems with the lack of storage space in here. There is one cupboard in the hall that houses a bookcase on which I store all my towels, beddings, blankets etc. The cupboard also has the vacuum cleaner, mop and bucket, clothes airers, ironing board, lawnmower, and a few other items. The kitchen cupboards are jam packed....you get the picture :rotfl:

I was about to bite the bullet and invest in some big baskets, storage containers etc when I thought I'd ask you lovely lot what people used to do for storage? Around the time this house was built for example, where did they expect the inhabitants to put anything?
  • They wouldn't of had as much as we do lol

    Hi Lalaladybird,

There's an earlier thread that should help so I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the ideas together.
