urbanite - Lets face a fact,I turn the computer on,use it for internet, excel, word and that is basically it (would be a touch surprised if many people don't just use it the same way) As for the technical side of things,I don't have a clue, which I imagine is why people are employed to solve such problems and can be highly paid for doing so.
I am extremly thankful to all who have contributed in this thread and while it is taking a long time I AM LEARNING.
Please feel free to offer your opinions but remember as humans were not good at everything, thankfully.
As too username - it is the best book written as far as I am concerned.catch220 -
Heres a question for you then catch22...
If you subsequently got hacked through your wireless set up (which is very easy to do), who would you blame?
The hacker for intruding, or yourself for not configuring your own security.
Its like owning a car without a license IMHO.£2 savers club = £83.500 -
@catch22
You're welcome.what patience you have.
With kids like mine who can try the patience of a Saint this is a doddle!!
Mind you I have some sympathy with urbanite's troll warning. Troubleshooting on line can be very difficult and, tbh, you didn't do yourself any favours (e.g. asked 6 times without response to check in Device Manager). If this had been a normal techie forum you'd have been roasted alive in the flames of the troll exterminators.
As you alluded, as with all things in life, it's a learning process. That includes posting on threads.
Top tip - for every single question asked/suggestion put forward by those trying to help out, always answer in full in your very next post. That means going carefully over every word of each post. It helps in your answer if you quote each question/suggestion in turn with your answer to each immediately below the quote.
Sometimes you may not see the need to answer, or the point of a particular question but you must. Many avenues often need to be explored in this manner to try to home in on the problem.
Sorry if I'm sounding patronising or sanctimonious - not intended. Just trying to head off a flame war between you and urbs when I can see both sides point.
TOG
p.s. having found your onboard LAN next steps would have been to have downloaded and updated mobo chipset and LAN drivers, otherwise you're paying for new kit that you've already got. But I sympathise 'cos I often find the best solution to a problem is to throw money at it as well!! LOL604!0 -

Ordered a USB/Ethernet adaptor.
Would that be USB in to RJ45 male or female?
I only ask because i have had to advise many people who have a USB based modem who was going to take the USB->Ethernet route only to find the cable was the opposite to what they needed.
A PCI Ethernet card costs less than a tenner and can be fitted and installed within minutes, and you dont have to rely on windows PNP to run it (windows is not the stablest of operating systems)
also,
have you tried using 192.168.2.1 rather than 192.168.0.1
It is sometimes the default path of the router/modem.
ps.... i'm not here to flame, unless the catch22 is a troll£2 savers club = £83.500 -
Just out of interest, connect the Netgear kit to your PC and phone line and enter the following at a command prompt:
IPCONFIG /ALL
and post the output here.0 -

I am waiting on an item from Ebuyer (some free advice - avoid them)catch220 -
OMG! I've got a Netgear DG834G sitting here waiting to be connected to my new computer which should be arriving next week.
It was supposed to let other family computers access the internet at the same time as the main one.
If it's going to be anything like the above hassle, I think I'll just bury my non-techie head in the sand and stick to the bog standard usb freebie thing I got from my bb provider.Herman - MP for all!0 -
I found the DG834G one of the easiest routers to set up.
are you going to connect the machines using wires or wireless?
If possible I'd have one machine with a wired connection, and do any configuration changes from the wired machine.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

Oh I really hope you're right blinky.
I'll have an ethernet cable from router to main pc and the rest upstairs (2 at present but may add a 3rd in time) will be wireless (hopefully!) All have wireless capability.
Existing computer doesn't have an ethernet port so I can't even try everything out yet.
Keep an ear out next week....you may 'hear' me yelling for help, lol.Herman - MP for all!0
