Could be disabled or missing driver? Is there anything with a red cross or exclamation mark in Device manager.

    Hi

''Are you happy how to check in the Bios and ensble it?''

    Sorry,have no idea..
    catch22
  • Easier than checking the BIOS, and something you should do first anyway is to check the network in Device Manager.

Right-click My Computer* then click Properties then the Hardware tab then Device Manager. In Device Manager expand the Network adapters. Are there any red crosses or yellow exclaimation marks against your Network adapters? If so, right click and click Enable or Properties and then Troubleshoot.

    * My Computer can be found in several places - in Windows Explorer, in Start menu and possibly on your desktop.
  • OK - Follow Chippy's suggestion (only 6th time it's been asked in this thread, lol). If it's there and you can enable it then good, you'll be in business.

If not, and I suspect this may be the case, you'll have to enable it in the Bios. If it's never been used before it'll probably still be set to the default of disabled.

Post back your Device Manager check and if you need to go into the bios we'll walk you thru it.

    Is this your motherboard??

  • What was listed under Network adapters?

For each Network adapter, click Scan for hardware changes. Then Properties and Troubleshoot.

    Done,nothing changed
    catch22
  • Please say what is listed under Network adapters (on your desktop PC).

It's possible that TCP/IP isn't enabled or set up properly. Go into Control Panel and then Network Connections (it might be called Network and Dial-up Connections on Windows 2000). Right click Local Area Connection and click Properties.

Is the same network adapter listed in Device Manager shown in the Connect using box?

Is Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) shown in the list of components? If not please say.

If it is shown is it ticked?

If it isn't ticked, tick it.

With Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) ticked, select it and click Properties. On the General tab, select Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Report back your findings and restart your computer if you've changed anything as a result of the above.

Another thing - are you using the R45 Ethernet cable supplied with the Netgear router/modem?

    Hi again,
Done, nothing needed changing, was set on automatically obtain, etc. Also under System it says no PC Card sockets are installed..

Again I must stress that Netgear could not find something like their FA311 when I phoned them. Also, internet is working perfectly with the modem supplied by e7even but the ethernet - ethernet cable does nothing while usb cable connects. I actually unplugged the e - e cable as it was doing nothing.

Now,the Netgear DG834GT which comes without a usb but with a e cable does not work.

  • OK, completely disconnect the USB modem and connect the Netgear modem/router.

It's been asked before, but enter http://192.168.0.1 in your browser, login in to the router config. screen and check its settings. You can also run the Setup Wizard to auto-detect the settings.

Check/change the Basic settings and the ADSL settings against those supplied by your ISP. For a typical UK ISP they are:

Encapsulation: PPP/VC (sometimes called: PPPoA or PPP over ATM)
Internet IP address and DNS address: Get Automatically from ISP
    NAT: Enable

    Multiplexing Method: VC-BASED
    VPI=0 VCI=38
    Encapsulation method: VCMUX
    Modulation method: G.DMT

Still in the Netgear web config. screen, click Router Status then Connection Status. It should show Connected and Success.
