In my opinion, the owners should be penalised, not the animals.
Ultimately its always the humans to blame, and I do believe there should be some draconian laws on dog ownership, but I doubt that will ever happen.
Just like with babies, any yingyang can knock one out, doesn't mean they have the skills and wherewithal to bring the kid up.
I would like to see effective well thought out dog licensing system and a cull of all unwanted dogs unless re homed within 30 days.
But I will live in hope as the govt made a dogs dinner of the dangerous dogs act, badly thought out knee jerk law and very badly implemented.0 -
Get a greyhound emptypockets
What sort of dog are you looking for anyway, maybe we can all have fun finding you possible matches? Have you looked at these already
Second Chance
Jerry Green,
RSPCA Nottingham has some female terriers
Oldies Club highlighting some of the seniors in rescue around the country.
Found this cute girlfriend for your boy who sounds like she needs some TLC, they home nationally too.
I don't think it would make any difference if all the pound dogs were culled, it would just make it easier for people to offload the next batch with all the freed up space. People's attitudes to pets need to change and penalties need to be harsher, its not just staffies that end up in the pound and if you look in most free ads there are so many people who've decided to have a litter or want to stud out their pet dog (of all breeds) for selfish reasons that will happily supplier all those "i want!" type irresponsible owners along with the puppy farms no questions asked type sales.0 -
The fashion for dogs is nothing new. It caused the Golden Cocker Sudden Rage Syndrome.
For some reason in the 50's, Golden Cockers were the dog to have. Without researching, I don't know why, maybe a popular film at the time?
Unscrupulous breeders, overbred and interbred to meet demand, so causing the problem.
Maybe similar happened with Rotties when they had a bad press. Now it's the turn for poor Staffies.
I wonder whether back in the 50's Cockers were sent to rescue? I rather think they were simply put down.
Something hethmar said on making sure money goes to small rescues?
Not all small rescues are good, as I learnt to my own cost.
One was diabolical, no volunteers that I know of so all funds go to one woman. No way to trace where any money goes and no after support when adopting a dog.
Another rescue has dedicated volunteers, not huge but worthwhile. So choose carefully.
The altruistic view of adopting a rescue dog, is all but placing one's finger in a dam to stop a leak. It simply will not work.
The only way is for Legislation against breeders, ie puppy farmers should be wiped out. Very tight controls on all pedigree breeders and a no breed zone for the rest of us.
That in time should free rescues from doing the job they do now, to police rogue breeders.
The RSPCA is well capable of initiating all the above and rallying troops, that is you and me, but haven't done so.
Might that be because the top dogs, or fat cats on the board of the RSPCA, are happy on £250,000 pa and don't wish to rock their boat?0 -
My rescue dog (a lab) is nearing 14, I went to the dogs home to look at other dogs to see what was available.
75% were staffs, I'd thought I'd handled it okay but I'd seen a lovely bull mastiff that seemed so gentle I went to inquire about her and promptly burst into tears, it was so embarrassing, I'm a 46 yr old woman.
Ending up getting two rescue cats which are my pride and joy!
I really don't think 30 days is enough, its not these poor animals fault, maybe more powers to combat dog fighting. I don't know!:(But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more0 -
Where is the education though? Legislation is probably needed, but I know for a fact that most of the back yard breeders I come acrss have NO IDEA of the unwanted dogs problem, or how letting their dog 'have just one litter' adds to the problem.
In recent years we have had all sorts of celebrity endorsed and government/media/industry funded education drives, about issues as diverse as battery farming and plastic bags - these really have changed the culture, and changed how many of us behave in our shopping habits.
The RSPCA really should be spearheading big public campaigns to make people aware of this problem, and aware of how it is created, and how it can be combatted. Consumer power often speaks louder than legislation in the year 2010!0 -
Its a long way to travel for you, but http://manytearsrescue.webs.com/ have a lot of small dogs looking for a home where there is already a resident dog. Most of their dogs are from puppy farms so have never lived in a home ...
We have a MTR rescue Labrador. She's an ex-breeding !!!!! taken from a puppy farm. We travelled 300 miles to get to the rescue in Wales and 300 miles home again, we then spent several hundred £ getting an E-coli infected spay wound sorted. She's an absolute delight but oh so stubborn :rotfl:
Was she worth it? I reckon so...0 -
We had our little rascals from Second Chance in Chellestan Derby. They were fab - you're able to see the dogs interact with each other as there's a yard for them to run about in, unlike most kennels we're they're cooped up most of the day. We've also rehomed from babbington rescue in notts and Hathern Rescue nr Loughborough leics - both might be worth a look if you haven't already.0

Second Chance is the one we try to visit every weekend
But the other two, we haven't heard about so thank you, off to have a look now."Your life is what your thoughts make it"

R.i.P our beautiful girl Suki. We'll love and miss you forever

My sister got her dog from Babbington rescue. Didnt realise you were in that area. Have you looked at half way rescue?

Do be aware that babbington do not routinely spey/neuter before rehoming - they do ask that you get them done, but it may be an issue if your existing dog is not done already.
The Mayflower at Bawtry is fab, (they rehome within a 50 mile radius, so i dont know if you would fall within that empty pockets?) but their website is down at the moment. BARK is up that way too, so you could visit both in a day0
