Perhaps it would be a better solution to PTS the lot as they come in I wonder what the successful re-homing rate is.

    Are you serious?

i'd love to get my first dog, its something ive really longed for since i was a very small child. I cant ever remember a time when I didnt ask for a dog for my birthday to be told "we''ll see" Im now going through the same response with my OH !! We have 4 cats and 2 children so we arent ideal re-homing material, im also fairly set over what breed I would like so that narrows it a fair bit, I too sit and look at the pages and get so upset seeing tons of lovely dogs with no homes !

Sadly I have to come to the conclusion that I am serious, I think we need some new draconian laws on dog ownership, sadly for that breed it does seem to attract idiotic owners.

I just googled before posting this and it didn't take long to find a pitt x mastiff pups for sale that are described as being "game"

There are a glut of staffs across the country, we don't need any more, and rather than attempting to re-home them I think it would be much fairer to get them PTS asap.

I would go as far as saying that all dogs in the pound should be pts.

ALL dogs? Surely you cant mean that
  • ahh... DKLS - there are two pound dogs in my family - a lurcher and a whippet pup - (and two more who would have been pound dogs if it were not for the good work of rescue organisations) the whippet pup was due to be put to sleep, so my mum offered to foster her - well, when she arrived, it turned out the is just a little pup, and is so sweet and so loving - and now she is staying.. they are both fantastic dogs, healthy, fit, and beautiful temprements. It would be a crying shame to put down these dogs, for no more than being found as strays - probably chucked out by people who liked the idea of a dog, but found they didnt really want the work.

I do agree with you that something has to be done - but I dont think putting down healthy dogs of sound temprement is the answer, (whatever their breed) or can ever be ok - more dogs keep flooding in, and will so long as people keep breeding them, and buying pups on a whim. In my opinion, the owners should be penalised, not the animals.

Ideally all the stupid chavs who buy Staffies to be 'ard' (the sort you see walking around topless with the dog off the lead and a huge studded collar) would be put down. They give the breed a bad name.

Yeah, like all the orphaned babies and children who find themselves in care, looking for foster homes and adoption with people who can understand them, help them through their trauma and committ to them for life. Might aswell just put all them kids out of their misery too then eh? even though they don't deserve it, it would be fairer, especially when people all around the world just keeping banging out kid after kid...

Sadly you are right about this. A prime example being many families on the council estate where I live - one of which has decided to make their staffie a chain link collar which is fastened with a padlock :( Clearly, this 'collar' is supposed to make the dog look intimidating and whilst it may do this, it also makes the owners look completely pathetic. This particular dog is viscious and has attacked my springer spaniel as we walked past earlier this year. It does make me wonder if the dog had ended up in a different, caring family how it would have turned out. Other staff owners I meet when out have very well behaved dogs that are happy to play with mine.

Staffies aren't the only victim of these scummy people. There are also plenty of rottweilers who are kept as backyard dogs/walking burglar alarms in my area. Admittedly there aren't as many of these but I feel strongly that this is an issue, as often they are never walked let alone given any form of attention and live a sorry existence. A neighbour a few doors away from me has had several rotties in the 3 years I have lived on the street, constantly trading one dog in for another when she gets bored of it/needs money. Her dogs have no more value to her than a can of cheap spray tan as far as I can see. This woman, like so many others has absolutely no attachment to the dog whatsoever. It's heartbreaking to live alongside people like this and I honestly don't feel that these dogs being PTS is the answer because the people who breed them don't care what happens as long as they get their money, so they will continue to breed. This type of person also has no strong regard for the law and getting into trouble isn't always a big issue for them. There is no easy answer as it's a viscious circle. Even bring back dog licenses won't work as only the responsible would pay if they could afford to and those that are responsible who couldn't afford it would worry out of their minds that they are going to have their dog taken away. It's a terrible situation.
