I'm currently reading "Collins Improve Your Grammar" (new user: can't post an Amazon link). I have a good education and write for a living, but I'm from the recent generation that was not taught any formal grammar at school. My grammar is pretty good because I somehow know what is correct from my life-long love of reading, but I can't explain why something is wrong. I'd highly recommend the book; it's more entertaining than it sounds!

When writing, you should avoid cliches like the plague

Like what? Go on....give us an example.:o

My writing is grammatically very poor as I only got to O Level too....but some things just look or sound incorrect.

It used to be the loose/lose thing on this board that wound people up.
''I think I will loose my house of interest rates rise'' rather than 'lose my house'.

Do you write stuff to direct people to your own site, or to other peoples sites?
Both. And every combination in between.

Sometimes I am paid directly for links, sometimes I wake up, scratch and think "I know, today I'll write about squirrels".

I can make money out of squirrels or hubcaps, combs or grass seed. The subject doesn't matter... it's all fluff for traffic.

I have one appalling piece of early work... took me 20 minutes, on a whim. Paid me about £250 to date I think. I suspect that masterpiece will top £1000 in the fullness of time.

If you can count things (one person, two people, 10,000 people...) it's fewer. If you can't count things (bread, sugar, rice), it's less.
What about the opposite, i.e. if there are more
Are there 2 different words for more depending on the type of thing being referenced?
If not, and we don't need a distinction for "more", then I see no need for a distinction for "less" (or there is an opening here to invent a new word).

    There are morer people
    There is more bread

Ah right, and if you can't grasp the simple concept, then the rest of us stand no chance?
Bravo to NDG for trying to educate a few of the "whatever" brigade.

Of course the usual suspects all reject any opportunity for enlightenment.

Well there is a time and a place.

  • I hate "passed away", too. "Died" is much more honest.

You're expecting English to be logical?
