Hi I'm Cloe's mum and I think it would be great if there was a junior board and we could restrict them to reading/posting only on junior threads.

I hate to be a killjoy here, but I can't see any way at all that this idea could work without opening the site up for a whole lot of problems that aren't needed (remember that Microsoft closed its MSN chat facility because of possible problems concerning children).

How could you guarantee that a child that joins up for the childrens boards are the age that they say?

How could you stop any adults joining the childrens boards?

How would you monitor any possible grooming that goes on?

How are you going to stop adults viewing the boards?

How are you going to stop the junior members viewing the rest of the site?

    ...................................................................

The only way this could possibly work is with a completely seperate site working together with strict authentication rules/sign up process (how would you put that in action?). Anything less could open this site up to massive liabilities.

Surely it would be better to keep the site (as it is) on track as a family friendly site as the rules specify now rather than open up further (possibly very serious) legal problems.

hiya to our new junior members :D

Im a bit dubious about a new junior board. I dunno something just tells me that this is a prodominently adult forum and probably better if it stayed that way.
How would you know that adults would not make up a new junior ID to get info out of genuine younger members ? Im a very cautious person by nature and always look on the bad side and id hate the idea of some idiot trying to get info out of a child.
Could it be made so younger members could only visit certain parts ?
Could it be made so they could not accept PMs ?

I dunno, im on the fence with this one

    Sorry :(

While I agree that the members of this forum are predominently adult there are youngsters on here and I just think a thread specially for them would be good. I can see problems with some trying to gain access to children, but that can happen anywhere on the web. Parents have to be vigilant - it's their job.

I wouldn't like the thread to be closed to adults for reading as I want to read what my DD is doing! I would like her though to be restricted in which threads she can post in.

I can understand that as this is a free to use site it might have practical difficulties in monitoring/staffing but I think it's good to open up youngsters to the :money: world!!

Just a careful warning to any junior moneysavers, some of you may be allowed to visit this site and any other sites without a parent watching, just be very careful because there are some nutters in this world. Never give any information at all out, dont even tell people where you are from, its ok saying im from the North East but make sure thats all you do say.

Im a mum and I worry about my Daughter, she knows what sites she is allowed to go on and im happy with that, what I dont want her doing is visiting boards like this where there can be one to one discussions like Private Messages etc.

Just be careful thats all............ok I know you must get the same from your parents but we only nag because we do care.

I have to agree with you Eagle and with Rex. There are many unwanted and unsavoury pm's exchanged and I wouldn't like to think that anyones daughter would be the recipient of this sort of thing.

Yes pm's can be disabled by the user but I don't think that MSE can be involved in the legalities that this sort of thing brings.

Already these youngsters have given away their ages and this is not just to signed up members but the many, many readers of MSE.
  • To any youngsters viewing the site over the next few days, please don't be frightened by the wizard in the top left hand corner, its really just Uncle Martin in disguise :rotfl::rotfl:

Someone posted a nice link for free Smilies for DD but since we've changed PC's we can't find them. Could the poster - repost?

    Thanks
