Oddly enough Sky have just called me. I've not been with them since this time last year. They offered 50% off and £50 credit with no 12 month contract. So £18 for the basic package Two and a half months free thanks to the credit and the advisor seemed extremely shocked when I declined. If they'd have offered that with £100 credit and no contract I might have agreed. Enjoyed a few months free sky then cancelled. But I'm not sure I could have been bothered with the hassle to be honest. the only thing I miss is the record function and I've ordered a freesat box which I can plug a HDD into to record.

I cancelled my aunties for her last week as I posted and they've not called and offered her anything as of yet. It took an age to actually cancel too. They wanted to know what TV shows she liked and what channels she watched. Spent ten minutes pitching their new show Fortitude etc. Overall it took about 40 minutes for them to actually cancel her services.

we were on a 75% off for a year and it was so cheap that I kept the sport hoping my youngest would be interested. when he wasn't I tried to cancel it on webchat. 45 minutes in to the call, 30 of those them asking what sport we liked, none, what sport do you watch, none this went on and on in the end gave up which I expect is all they are after :(

    Exactly. It was absolutely ridiculous.

What's TV shows does she like? What channels does she like? Does she watch kids shows? How about documentaries? Has she seen Fortitude? She should give that a watch it's really great it's about blah blah blah. And box sets. Does she like those (no because her sky box is so old she can't even record never mind download). She should try the black list. James Spader is great in that is she a fan of his?

Just cancel her service !!!!!!. As you said I think they're aiming for people getting so bored they just give up.

I have been with Sky for 20+ years we have Multi room with the full package including Sports and Movies none discounted price £82.50 before the rise in June 2015.

Over the last two years I have had two consecutive 50% discounts. On each subsequent year I phoned and cancelled, then waited for them to call me. I just tell them I was totally happy with the service and if I was to keep it I would not change anything, but can no longer afford to keep it, as everything else is rising in cost and cancelling Sky will pay for the lot.

I just ran out of my second year of 50% off, so I phoned and cancelled. You have to be polite and just tell them you don't want to reduce the package that you have, and have decided to do without it. Reject any offer that you receive before cancelling unless it exceeds 50%, usually the best you will be offered will be 25%.

After cancelling if you log into My Sky you will see a 35% off offer, ignore this and wait for them to call you. I cancelled on the 18th April and received a call from the Win Back team on the 31st April.

Again be nice and friendly on the call. Tell them that you have seen the 35% offer on "My Sky" and there is no way you can afford to pay that.

To cut a long story short, the call lasted 45 minutes, they once again attempt to get you to reduce your costs by ditching HD, Movies, Sports etc. Stand your ground and tell them that cancelling is the best option for you. The offers will then start to flow, keep rejecting them. Then inject into the conversation, that your friend next door who cancelled earlier in the year has just had a email offering of 60% off and a £100 credit to his account, further reinforce your position by saying you have thought about it and that is what you may do, wait for the best offers to arrive and them come back if you find you can't live without Sky after a few months. Once you have told them that, the very best offers will be offered to you on the phone.

I managed to get them to offer 50% of TV 50% off multi room and HD and a £50 credit, no contract and for 12 months. Cost after the price rises in June £39.

So it just goes to prove you can get over 50% discounts year after year if you are prepared to cancel.

I hope this helps you to reduce your cost.

    regards

I agree with all of this, with one important proviso.

Do you really need Sky? It's expensive for what they offer, even with 60% off and unless you spend hours a day watching TV I wouldn't call it good value for money - especially when you need a TV licence on top (something many forget). Each to their own, mind.

Just got another e-mail offering me 60% off for a year and £100 credit. You gotta admire their persistence.......
  • I have had Virgin for 15 years and pay £98 a month for unlimited phone calls including to all mobile numbers, up to 50mb broadband with unlimited download, XL TV package and a TiVO box. I don't have Sports or any movie channels. My friend has just got Sky and has got more or less the same package, though without the free calls to mobiles) and with a SKy +HD box instead of TiVo. She is paying £35 a month for a year and then it will double to £70. I rang Sky and they confirmed I could have the same offer. (Line rental is included)

I rang Virgin and said I wanted to change to Sky because of the moneysaving, and the guy said that Sky were rubbish, and that I wouldn't be able to cope with the terrible broadband (he said it was slow and unreliable) on Sky and that, if they WERE offering the price I was quoting, then he didn't know how they were making any money. He was really unfriendly and towards the end of the call he said he could offer me £8 a month off if I stayed.

I was unsure what to do because he put me off by saying that the broadband was so rubbish, and I would be really interested in what anyone on here thought I Would be better doing. I have never changed over before.

Is it just standard ADSL broadband that Sky are offering you or fibre?

If it's ADSL, check what speed you can get before you commit as it will be much less than 50Mb that you are getting now. Depending on what you use the internet for, ADSL could well suit your needs anyway.

Bear in mind that you can keep your phone number if you switch away - I did when I went from Sky to BT.
