Would you give a discount to someone without making them jump through a few hoops to see if they really did want to drop your service?

Was with Sky with a basic TV, phone and unlimited broadband contarct for £46/m which included HD for £2/m special offer for 6 months so I could watch F1, which has now expired. Rang them to tell them we're moving and I'd like to cancel as talk talk were doing pretty much the same for £25 and go them down to £31/m which I'm happy with as it's a free house move etc. Quite happy with that.

You may well have to – and you cannot rely on getting one even then.

Certainly, however, you're extremely unlikely to to be offered a 50% discount unless you do cancel.

There's a chance that Sky will then come back to you with a 50% discount offer before your service is terminated and a better chance that Sky will offer you one to "Return to Sky" a few weeks after you've been cut off. But neither of those are certain.

Bear in mind that if you do terminate your HD pack you won't be able to get that back – ever. If you want HD, you'd have to re-subscribe on the "Entertainment Extra Plus" pack, which, crucially for some, does not include the Formula One channel(s). It would also be for a new 12 month minimum term.

Didn't someone once say that the deals come round in circles so some months are good retention deals, some months are not-so-good retention deals?

Yes. But there is no way of knowing whether that was true and/or still applies.

When selling the old HD Box (and my old sky+ box), is it better to sell with or without the old viewing card?

[Finally cancelled today, just need to look for a freesat recorder now]
  • Still nothing from SKY so have gone ahead and moved broadband & phone to EE, got a good deal of £2.50/month for unlimited broadband with £132/year for line rental including free calls on Saturday & Sunday plus £126 cashback through TOPCASHBACK on a 12 month contract, making it only £3/month altogether including the line rental. Can't find this any cheaper and after 12 months can move again.........still waiting for SKY to give me a better offer on TV, hoping that now I have moved broadband so quickly and easily that they'll offer us a better deal on TV.

This may or may not affect your decision but the Sky contract prohibits the selling of viewing cards. Also, it would be registered at your address and thus be traceable to you.

Well I have I have called Sky today and cancelled my package, recently I have been on a offer of 25% discount for 9 months (originally for 6 months then extended for another 3 months).

Over the years I have threatened to cancel a number of times and have always been offered something before the cancellation has been activated, this time I got nothing probably due to the fact that I have had a recent offer.

I will be able to hold my nerve and cancel but not too sure if I'll get orders from the wife and kids to cancel the cancellation nearer to 13th Sept

    31 days and counting!
