Anyone recently requested cancellation from Virginmedia by giving them 30 days notice only to be offered a decent deal before the notice is up?
I know this is a common tactic but it seems the sentiment at the moment is that VM like Sky are starting to tighten up now.
  • I know what you mean, if they think you've no intention of cancelling, you're in a weak position. My first call was 'please give me a discount' which had always worked in the past, my second was a genuine cancellation call.

They definitely have a new approach to customers calling; you can see from the last few pages that they'll let you cancel. Both operators told me they don't have access to the sort of discounts they used to have. In my view, because their discounting policy is so well known now (largely because of sites like this ;)!) they want to change it.

One thing to bear in mind - they have all previous dialogue and deal history 'on file' when you call - it will all be shown instantly on their computer screen. So when you say 'had always worked in the past', the agents will know your form and probs think 'he/she are not getting another bl*dy discount'. Lesson being you can only push your luck so much in getting discount on a deal you agreed to.

But again, in the past that didn't seem to matter. (I never used to get the amazing deals people have posted on here in the past btw, only the odd discount here and there). I think now they are certainly looking at previous deals people have had.

I think it's worth pointing out that Sky have got themselves in this position. They started giving discounts to everyone so it going to annoy people who are used these when they are no longer forthcoming. I think it'll just make us think more closely about our packages and calling them in good time to cancel sports in the summer etc.
  • sky tv was due to finish 22 jan only had basic programmes and phone and b/band,got a call out of the blue asking why i was cancelling ,told them cost ! to which they replied we will give you all tv bundles half price including hd. bottom line was i asked how much in total for bb phone [with unlimited calls], line rental, tv with sports, movies and hd all for 12 months [my longest deal ever] with no contract......the answer was £54.75 .i have until mon to make a decision. opinions? cheers and happy new year to you all

For me that would be too much, but I don't know what you currently have, I binned the sports and movies about 4 years ago to bring costs down.

I currently pay £30 a month for phone, BB, a sky package (kids and entertainment pack). So another £24.74 for HD, sports and movies doesn't seem unreasonable is it unlimited BB?

I've been impressed with Sky broadband, no issues with it since installed in 2010.
  • yes unlimited b/band ,seems i have /had the same as you del astra. i would say that the speed isnt the best for b/band but then i dont download a lot of stuff. so for under £25 i get movies sports and hd ,decisions decisions.

Anytime I check I am getting 16MB, I can stream from lovefilm to two devices and have laptop, phone connected to wifi, so it works for me. Had Orange previously now that was slow.

You should also be able to get a 2TB box for a one off fee of £50 as you are taking the HD.
  • all ready have an hd box no idea of difference what 2tb is.im sure where i stay the internet is just slow

Have bben getting discounts for many years myself and just recently disconnected without being offered any reduction - I was coming off a 4 months free deal.

My thoughts are that they are testing my resolve!

If I crack and ring them I will pay full price. If I hang on they will be in touch to offer me a deal whenever. Big store is put on subscriber numbers with Sky, perhaps they are doing well at the moment and don't need my custom!
