No, you can use an HD box with an SD TV, but obviously it won't display an HD image.
Yes, HD boxes have the Sky+ functions.

Well I finally got a better offer from Sky in the post today, still 50% off for 12 months but this time with £50 credit thrown in. Thanks but no thanks Sky, keep trying, offer me the 75% deal and I might consider, but only with a decent HD deal thrown in too!!

Sky free for a year and got the same offer, might give them a call and see if they'll give us new box, if not I'll stay Sky free.

Although there is now an HD box with no record functionality - for multiroom applications, I believe.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hi-I have had sky tv with sports/movies, and phone/BB with virgin(10mb/evenings and w/e phone/medium tv), for several years on deals. Sky was £34.50 and virgin £31 ish.
Sky will now only offer 25% discount, and can get the lot minus movies and kids tv but with same tV package in 2 rooms for £65. Seems best I can get at moment, but sky have previously come back to me on last day of contract with an offer. Will cancel sky today and see what happens.
Anybody got any better recent deals? Dont want ot switch BB to sky despite great price becasue not sure of quality and speed where I live.

Update- 2 weeks after leaving Sky I got a call asking me if I would be interested in rejoining if offered a deal. I was. The first offer they made was 75% off my package of sports/movies for 12 months, though I still had to pay the £10 for HD. Total cost per month is £24....I did push for a few M&S vouchers too, but no go!!!Worth a try!!
I took this happily, so it's worth waiting. I'm sure it helps I have Virgin too, and thus a good bargaining tool.
So, be patient and hold tight...you'll be glad you did!

  • A little update from me, not so sure if this is a good deal:

    XL TV
    New TiVo box (£15.00 installation)
    V+ box multiroom
    Sports/movies
    Talk weekends/Phone
    30 MB BB
£65 credit on first bill as a freebie

    £77 a month.

I rang to cancel.... due to be cancelled on 21st this month!
Do you think they will contact me before its due to end? will I still get any deals if ive still got phone/broadband with sky?

Thinking i should have cancelled the lot.. but dont know if would have made any difference

Also, Ive got a lot of programs recorded on my Sky box, will these be deleted once my package ends or will they stay on there (can re-watch them if/when I rejoin?)

    Thanks

Your recordings won't be deleted , you just won't be able to watch them. If you rejoin at a later date you will be able to watch them again ( assuming you have resubscribed to the same channel(s) :)

The recordings are encrypted and the decryption will not function once you cease your sub.

But as patchman says, if you rejoin Sky at a later date (with the same channels in your package) you can watch them again.
