  • Thanks ICTD. I was hoping to clear it by the time the little bump emerges, but it turns out babies can be very expensive, even though we're quite happy to borrow off friends etc. But it'll be worth it - the only worry is every male I speak to tells me it's going to change your life forever and sleep becomes a distant memory :)

Oh yes, it will change your life forever, and you will end up sacrificing all sorts of time, money, priorities, freedoms, that you thought you couldn't manage without. But they are worth it, a million times over. ;)

About the sleep thing... encourage Mrs OM to bf - get her to read Bestfeeding (note the spelling) by Chloe Fisher & some other people. Somebody lent it to me while I was pregnant with my first, and I was so much better prepared than if I'd relied on the antenatal classes. Bf is soooo much easier and more convenient than bottles (not to mention massively cheaper), but it can be tricky to get started unless you have the right info and support, and lots of women find it very demoralising if they can't make it work. You read the book too, so you will be better able to support her.

Anyway, I digress.... bf means you can learn how to roll over and go back to sleep while Mrs OM feeds the baby, so you will get loads more sleep than if she is expecting you to take a turn with night bottles. Don't worry that that's taking advantage of Mrs OM, though. With bf, the mum can pick up the baby, latch it on, and feed it without getting out of bed, which I really appreciated. Once she and the baby have got the hang of it, she can even go back to sleep while the baby's still feeding, as long as you have some kind of barrier to stop the baby falling out of bed - they are fairly cheap and you can use them later when the toddler moves into a proper bed - or have a "sidecar" cot, ie cot with the side bars off and the mattress adjusted to the same height as your bed, pushed right up against your bed so the surfaces are continuous with each other.

Of course, the terrors of child-related sleep deprivation will still hit you in the toddler years, but by then you will have had a bit more chance to acclimatise.

    Best wishes, and good luck.

  • Whew - weekend now. Busy week, one to go till half term, but I cold do with a good rest :) Am going to do some cooking to fill the freezer this weekend. If energy allows, I'm going to head off to the supermarket tonight to pick up some bargains, failing that, tomorrow am.
Am looking forward to the rest, feeling quite tired but enjoying work overall. Not a lot to say really - am hoping to get some money off the good wife at the end of this month but it's a bit of a pain as we've got a whole load of car expenses all coming together at the same time - MOT, Service, fixing things that are going wrong and insurance. Ugh. Cars really aren't cheap are they.

  • And first for Nov - 1k off. Have decided to persevere until 31/12/11 and then slow down as we have 2012 being such a huge change in terms of baby and single income. However when the metaphorical sun shines, it's time to make metaphorical hay.
