  • Wow, I admire your dedication to the cause OM!
    Mortgage May 2012 - £129k
    January 2015 - Mortgage down to £114k
Target for 2015 to get down to £105k
  • Thanks sir! I think we're very fortunate, 2 people in decent jobs, happy to work hard and put in the hard graft etc, plus a wife who is very sensible with money like me. It's a marriage made in heaven. As I say, it won't carry on forever, so I think it'll stop on 31 Dec 2011, and then a more balanced savings policy will be made, but with the inroads made into our mortgage it will give a bit of freedom for us for the next few years.

September 2016 - Back into clearing a mortgage - Was due to be paid off in 32 years in March 2047 -

Predicted mortgage clearing 03/2047 - now looking at 02/2045

Aims: 1) To pay off mortgage within 20 years - 2037
  • And, rang up car breakdown company today and managed to save £75 on what they wanted us to pay compared to what we did by threatening to leave. It worries me how much people must overpay if they accept what is written on the paperwork/form. Pleased for 10 minutes work.

  • Hoping you and especially MrsOM are well and the planning is coming along for the little one's arrival. God Bless.
Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x
  • Had a good (cheap) week and rather pleasingly, I have just haggled with house insurance and managed to save £80 on what they were threatening to charge, adn in fact it's a reduction of £30 on this year, for improved terms and conditions to me.
I'd say that's 26 minutes of my life well spent :)

  • Which has rather fallen off track by a huge Christmas shop, (loads of lovely food). However MOM's car was going to be fixed for a faulty bit of wiring but the cold weather seems to have fixed it - so we may put it off until it goes again - just an internal light, nothing serious like brake lights. Don't you worry about that.

  • Oh dear I'm falling off the MSE wagon! Have been aiming to cut back on spending but this weekend spent money on stuff that I needed e.g. car bulbs and other exciting things like razors and deodorant (all bulb bought from Costco) but they're expensive to buy initially but will be a saving long term. It's been a super costly month, everything has come at once, service, insurance, breakdown cover, house insurance the list goes on. November is always expensive and I forget every year to budget accordingly...
However from next month there's a small respite - some things I don't pay for, for a few months such as water rates, council tax (in Feb and March) etc. Will make a big difference to savings.

  • So silly qn: In a few months (let's say May at the latest) we will hopefully be relatively mortgage free... Can anyone confirm 2 things:
    a) I should leave say £100 in my account so I can access my overpayments at any time I assume? I don't think they're kind enough to let me access the money at the same rate again if I clear everything are they?
    b) Should we move (this is 5 years down the line) I am able to draw down the money I've overpaid and will pay it back at the same rate I've got, e..g base rate + 1.49%. If I go over the original mortgage amount, would I get it at the original 1.49 rate or would it be a second mortgage at the current rate? I think it's "option b" but am hoping it could be "option a".

As ever, I bow to superior knowledge in our forum here.
