    Lovely news.
I am sure you are looking after Mrs OM brilliantly, and I can tell that you're doing the most important thing, which is to be excited about it with her. Sadly, not all mums-to-be get that from the dads-to-be, but it's very special when they do. :A

  • I'm going to be honest, I'm annoyed with myself this week - loads of things are stacking up, I forgot I had a dental appointment until yesterday, which was all good but that was £17... Also had other things, shopping being expensive etc. Suddenly my "head plan" on what to save for the end of the month looks a little distant. On the bright side, it's a lovely day, been a really enjoyable week at school, and it's over half way through the week.
Having chatted to MOM, we're planning on not really buying anything for a few months, then getting it all in the Christmas sales. Which means some time to focus our minds on budgeting etc - I have no idea what the impact of losing a salary is going to be; in some ways we are well sheltered as we live within one salary as it is, but I think actually losing the second salary not having the "buffer" will take me some time to get used to :( Any advice?

Just keep reminding yourself that you are not going to be able to manage OPs anything like as much as you have been making, but this is OK because it is because you are having a baby and the baby is worth it. :D

The thing about babies, and kids generally, is that they keep growing. On the one hand this means they keep needing new stuff, but on the other hand it means that they generate lots of outgrown stuff to pass on to other people. Get to know some friends and family members who have kids a bit older than yours and let it be known that you're not too proud to accept cast-offs. It'll save you a fortune. Also try freecycle, and if you can't get stuff for free then ebay. :)

Oh, and when the baby arrives, lots of people will probably ask if there's anything they can do to help. Say "yes please" first, and think of something for them to do afterwards. :rotfl:

  • Lois_E, good advice! I've used freecycle to get rid of clutter already; I think we will have a lot more to get rid of in the near future too - as we change priorities for want of a better word. You're right, the baby is/will be worth it, and I need to get a changed mind set. In time, I will get the hang of it.
Lois_E, I'll wait for you to ask me how you can help, and I'll put you down for baby sitting if that's okay :0

  • I've had another cracking day - I know it won't last forever, esp. as I've not done any marking etc yet! But am really enjoying the interaction with kids and engaging with them. Glory be.

  • Also, am I right in viewing our offset as an adequate replacement for "emergency funds"? I view it that if puch came to shove, I'd dip into that if anything broke or anything, rather than having it sit in another pot somewhere else?

Weekend upon us, trying to live cheaply this weekend, off to see friends for breakfast and rugby tomorrow am - come on England - and well done Ireland after today's performance.
