It's a start I suppose.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -
Maybe some investigative paper can use the same new measures used to detect benefit fraud on our politicians.I for one would like to see what the personal wealth on and offshore is of the cabinet and partners.
Two of the first things the current govt did was to limit the tax of the wealthy , inheritance tax and care home fees.Keeping money in the family and not the taxman and making out its best for everyone when it only affects the top 6 percent of earners and more effectively the top 1 percent of those with large estates benefit the most. The next thing they did was decreasing the jobs available funded by taxpayers , decreasing the benefits when they are turfed out , and rehoming them to other areas where housing is affordable to the state.
When exactly do you think it will affect you , if it already hasnt with low interest rates forcing you to spend instead of save. And reclassifying pensions to cpi and rpi wiping more than 20 percent off your hard earned.
The tories have a cheek going after benefit scroungers , these politicians and their ilke pay less tax than you and I ..... but oh we are all in this austerity together though arent we?Have you tried turning it off and on again?0 -
If someone is contributing to production and the GDP stats, bringing trade to the UK, how are they a burden?
Its not a wind up. If people didnt suck the life out of this country by being needy and requiring support from the state, in its most extreme form, there would be no need for tax. Look at the US as an example of this. Much lower sales taxes, income tax and capital gains tax, lower state provided services. I know what scheme I would prefer to be under.
I wonder whether so many poor people would be obese and chain smoke if they knew there was no treatment for them when their poor lifestyle choices manifested itself as disease?
Dave, Dave, what are you doing on here....haven't you got a country to run?0 -
The problem is that the majority of the £25Bn 'Tax Gap' as the unions put it, is due to the many loopholes that exist, and the MP's are 'avoiding' a fair bit of tax themselves by utilising these loopholes, hence, by closing them they would be affecting their own incomes.
The biggest loop hole is the payment in dividends for company directors.
Now I understand that it is a way of rewarding entrapreneurs and helps bring jobs and improve the economy, but surely there has to be a point where it just becomes tax evasion, not avoidance.
I've seen many examples of people taking £30k-80k in dividend payments. which when your a 20% taxpayer reduce your tax bill by half, and as a 40% or 50% taxpayer substantially reduce your tax liability.
There needs to be a limit on this, say a maximum of £20k a year, if you want a higher income, then you have to pay yourself under the normal rules (PAYE) and therefore pay an honest amount of tax like everyone else. The other option is to put a limit on the number of years you can be paid in dividends by the company, say in your working lifetime you can be paid in dividends for a maximum of 5 years, no matter how many new ventures you start up.
Also, these Sole Traders who suddenly decide it's more beneficial to be a Ltd Comapny, this should also stop. You should not be allowed to become a limited company when you are a 'one man band'.
The same applies to film relief, Enterprise Investment Schemes, and Venture Capital Trusts. Either scrap them or bring them under tighter control.
Sole traders who make a loss every year or have expenses in excess of 75% of their turnover should have to produce receipts to cover every expense and every invoice should be produced.
Maybe bring in a reporting system where if you do a job for an individual, i.e. fit a kitchen as a self employed person, the person who has the work done should have to send in a report to HMRC to advise the amount paid to the individual, this would stop sole traders accidentally 'losing' an invoice.
Working for HMRC you do see that there are a lot, (the majority of people) who toe the line, but there are lots who you know are swinging the lead and under declaring, or just simply taking the !!!!.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Excellent idea! Just what this country needs - more bureacracy.
Who did you say you work for?
How about a far simpler tax system and far fewer taxmen and women, to administer it?0 -

Does anyone honestly think the Gov't want to make the system easier?
Those who work at HMRC have been asking for years for a simpler system, all we get is more rules and regulation, set by people who know nothing about tax, the administration of tax, or the collection, but seem to think they have all the answers.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

I agree, there's noting more copmplicated than the tax system, I use it everyday and it's a minefield. However, do you not think there is a reason for this?

Well it was certainly the case with the last incumbent of No 10, who seemed to believe he could micro-manage reality into compliance with his fantasies.
That said, I've little hope the present shower will be much better.0
