Hi, just found this thread and it has brought back some wonderful memories. We went for 5 days and didn't manage to do everything. Never mind will have to go back again one day!
We did do the Empire State Building at dusk as all the streetlights were coming on and that was breathtaking. We did get an advance ticket so we did not have to queue. Also got tickets for a show on Broadway using the reduced tickt booth in times square.:j
Also got a yellow cab one evening just for the experience. We had no problems with the subway, infact found it friendlier than London underground. One morning we were standing on the platform waiting for the subway train, when the train pulled in we realised we were on the wrong side of the platform and wanted to go in the opposite direction. The driver of the train got out of his cab and walked up to us on the platform and asked us where we were going. He advised us to get on his train to the next stop then we would be on the right platform for the train we wanted.
If you have time I would recommend visiting the Frick Collection, it is like an oasis of calm amongst all the hustle and bustle and is easy to get to as it is only a couple of stops on the subway.
Definately agree with the post advising to find a deli or diner for breakfast, mountains of pancakes and maple syrup with free top ups of coffee. Sets you up for the day.........mmmmmm.
However, what I would definately go back to New York for is the frozen margaritas. We were in a Mexican restaurant and a native new yorker recommended that we have one. So glad we did.
Have a great time

hammy_the_hammer wrote:probably the hop on hop off buses that go round all the sights as you've only 2 days.
if not staten island ferry
ground zero (more dramatic possibly if you visited before 9/11)
lunch at south street seaport
walk through chinatown
empire state building (time it for twilight maybe)
grand central station to look at ceiling and the 'grandness' of the place...come out at street level to get good view of chrysler building
united nations
central park
rockefeller centre
walk down broadway combine with times square
5th avenue window shopping
mcsorleys for a couple of beers
i'm sure there's far better lists and you could add loads to it
get a guidebook and look at what you really want to do
if you are emigrating to canada i wouldn't worry about the shopping too much as you can come back across the border to countless places in the US to while away some hours in the future
That's awesome info, didn't see this post, thanks very much!0 -

Go to the bar here. It is somewhere near 2nd and 12th and is one of the most amazing bars I have ever been in. Loads of other (much cheaper bars) next door and nearby (its $15 a G&T) in here. The view across the rooftop swimming pool and over the hudson to the Sof L, is breathtaking. The music wasnt bad either! When you go into the side entrance, the lift is right in front of you.0 -

Had a great time in NYC just got back today and really thought it was a wonderful city!
So hard to say what the best bits were did ESB and the Rock but the latter I found a bit too scarey so wouldn't do it again but rest of group loved it. The bus trips are excellent value at $49 for 3 different tours, a boat trip and a free museum entry. Walking was such good fun. Did little shopping Bloomingdales does 11% off card as well as Macy's. We saw Will Smith filming which was fab! Ellis Island was fantastic, Grand Central Station, Teas at the Waldorf Astoria (tho Sunday brunch looked better but not sure of the cost!!). So many thins please anyone pm if they want anymore info!!0 -
