In New York you should do these things...
Have eggplant parmigiana
go on the boat trip round Manhattan Island (v. cheap good after flight recovery trip...)
Sit on a hotel roof terrace at night
Have a bagel, or two, or three...
Take in the smell, a mix of sewage, coffee, traffic and cigarettes!
GO to a deli and get a salad - YUM!
Visit the UN headquarters
Go to central park
Have iced lemonade - like a sorbet really
Go up the empire state building
Use the buses rather than the underground so you can actually see what's around you, and it is a lot cooler!
Buy trainers - styles that won't be here for months at half the price
Enjoy yourself (pah! not jealous at all of anyone who's going there!...)Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
I have done reading too!

Agree with it all and want to go back now!
We did the helicopter ride too and highly recommend it - we bought a combined circle bus helicopter ticket from Greyhound.
Oh and there used to be a huge Kmart opposite Macy's - like Walmart but cheaper. Fab for sunglasses, make up (Maybelline mascara) etc -
Have a wonderful time - you will love it!The smallest deed is greater than the grandest intention ~ Anonymous0 -
Hi ksrao,
Of course i'm not accusing you of being wrong-i just looked on the Daily Mail & US Embassy sites
The US Embassy site says there are no current changes planned
I just hope that the visa waiver scheme will not be abolished as i love my trips to the US-would live there if i could do so legally !

Please see a copy an email that the UKPA sent to me (within 10 minutes of me emailing them I hasten to add !!)
I was concerned that my new passport issued in March, which is machine readable, but not bio metric (with the bird and chip) would do for a trip the states in November as I was aware regs changed in October and this is the reply....

Thank you for your enquiry. As long as your current passport is machine readable and has a full 6month validity left on it on your return to the UK, and you meet thevisa waiver scheme requirements, you can travel on that passport to theUS without a visa in November and January 2007.
Thank you
Mary
NB. you can obviously travel any month, it was just me who was asking about Nov and Jan****************************0 -
hammy_the_hammer wrote:alison do you know if the Macy's card is valid in all stores ? also can you obtain them from other Macy's stores ?
there's a really nice Macy's store in Danbury Fair Mall and we didn't pay any tax (as it's in Connecticut ??? just over the NY border )...but another discount would have been bliss!!
Macys card is valid in all Macys stores throughout the USA. If you don't mind rumaging for bargins try Daffys just off Lexington near Bloomingdales, it's a bit like Marshalls/TK Max,
Canal Street is fine, never had any problems there. If you have a british accent you can get away with loads in USA anyway!!
One thing, no matter how old you are, take ID when you go out to drink, some places in the Us are really anal about asking for it, even if you look 80!0 -
ksrao wrote:Whoever wants to visit USA do it now.I read in todays DailyMail that they are going to abolish VWP for British citizens soon and you have to apply for visa in US embassy, stand in the que and pay some hectic visa fees.
The cessation of the VWP for British Citizens has been on the cards for a while now, but it's implementation has been put back due to difficulties in establishing the new system (and the fact that the US will lose a large slice of income from the UK tourist trade). It basically stems from 9/11.
The US congress have been actively discussing the VWP in the past couple of weeks and are now seeking closure on this matter ASAP as the UK is now regarded by many high ranking officials within US Govt as a breeding ground for Islamic extremists and terrorists (their words not mine).0 -
Just remembered that another one.............
Got to the Hershey's shop in Times Square (you can't miss it) and pay $5 and get your name in lights outside the shop for 15 minutes.
They give you the time it will come on and it flashed round in a scroll continuosly for 15 minutes ! You can just say 'Alison was here' or do Happy Birthday one etc.
It's fun to do and is now the best option now that HSBC have stopped putting people's faces up on the buildingsIt was such a fun thing to have your face beamed at the top of the building where the cup noodle adbert is.

Haven't been on holiday for nearly 12 years so am really looking forward to it x0 -
