Never tried Sloe Gin but Chrissie at Yorkshire Pantry has just posted a recipe for Christmas Cake flavoured vodka and I've already put a note in the calendar to make it next September!! :j

That looks lovely but TBH I'd be worried about using that many cloves for an extended period, they tend to get very strong, I'd usually use a couple of cloves for a day or maybe two and go by smell as to when to take them out.

    Hi

I've done Sloe Gin and also Toffee Vodka this year. Strained and filtered out the sloes from the gin at the week-end and it looks and smells good, (ahem, had a little taste!). I'm not too keen on drinking the stuff neat but it does make a nice long drink with tonic and loads of ice. Such a pretty, festive colour. Also made Sloe Gin Jelly with the strained sloes.....(waste not, want not as they say!) ;):p:o

I haven't made any flavoured spirits this year as I'm still drinking my HM damson gin from last year: one bottle went mouldy (I don't think I strained it well enough :() but the other one's still good.

Ruby Pudding's link has made me think of spiced rum, of which I'm very fond - I wonder if that's something you can make at home, as my drink project for next year?
Back after a very long break!
  • Yes me, I bottled mine last night and it tastes lovely. The sloe vodka isnt ready yet though, boo hoo
Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!
  • I'm just about to bottle up some of my infamous sloe gin but I've lost the coffee filters that I usually use to strain it and there's no way I can get to town before Christmas to buy any (30-odd mile round trip).

Would it be okay to filter it through a clean tea towel or something similar? :o

Have you got some clean stockings you could use?
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire

I've just found 2 bottles of last years sloe gin at the back of the cupboard (not sure how they escaped me!).
They don't look, smell or taste quite the same as the original batch.I was under the impression that sloe gin didn't go off and that it was hard for anything to grow in it. The gin has become darker which might be oxidation but there is alot of sediment which I suspect might be yeast. The gin tastes more harsh than before, is it possible that there has been some secondary fermentation in the bottle? Has anyone had anything like this happen before?
